Chapter 20: Why Gin’s Bed is no Good, and the Truth of the World

“I mean! You’re a virgin, too!”

“………what?”

After dozens of seconds, Craig’s eyebrows raised. Shun stood up without thinking when he responded, “Well, now that you mention it…” with an embarrassed tone. With a rustle, the blankets fell onto the bed. It didn’t matter what he was saying, even if he was giving Shun a suspicious look.

“Comrade!”1

   1. The text said “friend/mate”, but I felt like comrade fit better in this context…

Shun grabbed Craig by his arms, pulling him up to spin around in a circle. If he had done this on hard ground, his feet would have made a soft noise. However, it was a soft carpet. Their feet didn’t make any noise at all, and Shun almost fell over after a bit.

“Oh, I’m a bit dizzy…”

Even though Shun was now leading a healthy life, his semicircular canal still wasn’t that strong. He had gotten a bit carried away and now felt sick. He crouched while holding onto Craig’s hand. Craig, who had been left wide eyed, laughed with shaking shoulders.

“Is that what you’re curious about?”

After returning Shun to the bed, his face had neither his usual frown or a look of self-deprecation. His eyebrows had smoothed out into a soft expression, and he laughed properly.

“No, that…”

While Shun was trying to maintain a frown, a beautiful smile like that was bad for his heart. He couldn’t keep looking directly at it, so he looked down.

When he looked down, he saw their joined hands. His heart thumped, and suddenly became very aware of the nerves in his hand.

Craig’s hand was bigger than Shun’s and often held a sword. It was kind of hot. This hand touched his cheek and lifted his chin with long fingertips, exposing his miserable appearance to his beautiful irises.

Shun, and that expression he had called him earnestly comes back to mind. It was the first time that he’d been looked at with such lustful eyes, and they had been full of nothing but Shun. His cheeks flushed. No, not only his cheeks, but also his ears, neck, and even his fingertips. How stupid of himself to hold onto Craig and become conscious of it.

“What is it?”

Craig seemed to be looking at Shun, whose thoughts were interrupted by his words, but he could neither answer or meet his gaze.

“Ah…”

He must have noticed what Shun was thinking about. A little bit later, Craig let Shun’s hand go.

“It’s really alright now. I won’t harm you again.”

What caught Shun’s eyes was the expression he hated on Craig’s face with a hand on his head. It was certainly sudden, and Craig was technically in the position to be blamed. But Shun hadn’t hated it. It wasn’t “harm” to him.

Strict quarantine. It wasn’t a word that was usually used. Craig had placed himself in it so he wouldn’t hurt anyone and struggled with that unbearable fever, even though it wasn’t his fault.

“I’ll be back soon, and you can sleep here.”

He stood up and turned his back on Shun. It felt like he was hiding his expression from Shun.

“Wait!”

Shun grabbed him by the hem of his clothes to hold him back. Amber eyes looked at him in deep surprise. Craig hadn’t expected Shun to try to continue speaking with him, much less stop him. Shun’s chest felt full.

“If you don’t mind me, I’ll go out with you!”

“…what?”

“I mean, you know, when you’re in heat.”

Shun continued despite Craig’s obvious surprise. He understood that what he was saying was certifiably insane, but he was desperate.

“As a man, I understand how hard it can be, and I would like to do something to help you. We’re also both new to this, and even if something happens, it’s not like I could get pregnant.”

What’s the worst that could happen? Even as he thought this, he wanted to stop his mouth but couldn’t.

“Do you know what you’re saying?”

Shun was a little frightened by Craig’s low voice and his unreadable eyes. Shun’s own face had to be bright red. He was embarrassed, but he also couldn’t leave Craig all alone in a cell like that.

“There is pain in the first time for a virgin, and even if I don’t know whether you’re a virgin or not, since I’m also a virgin, I won’t know whether you’re good or bad. I also don’t care if you are or not, and I don’t mind that you’re a virgin. It’s a good thing for us to both be virgins!”

“Hey… quit saying virgin!”

Shun covered his mouth with one hand as Craig made a good point. Additionally, he had said all he wanted to and looked up at Craig.

Craig put a hand on his forehead and let out a deep sigh. Then, as if exhausted, he lay back onto the bed next to Shun.

“I’ve never cared if I’m a virgin or not, but I’m starting to feel miserable.”

Craig muttered despairingly, “I’m not good at this…”

“Oh, I’m sorry…”

It was nothing but a trifle to have experience with his circumstances. Reflecting on his thoughts, Craig burst into laughter.

“Don’t worry about it. It’s new to me because I’m far from bothered by such ordinary things. I feel out of tune when I talk to you.”

Biting back his laughter, Craig, who had been on the run since he was a teenager, had lost his depressed look from earlier and looked like he had lost his grip.

“No, but I’m sorry. The fact that I have no experience at my age is a complex that gave me a sense of camaraderie.”

“It’s okay.”

Craig sat up with a little laugh. The distance between them seemed to have shrunk, and their shoulders touched a little.

“And you don’t have to feel inferior. It doesn’t make you better if you’ve done it with a woman you liked or not.”

Shun hadn’t expected him to say something like that. If Shun had said something like that, he felt like it would just come off as something a loser would say. However, from someone like Craig, it felt like the truth of the world. The power of a handsome man was amazing.

But that soon ceased to be so. His gaze was so close that Shun could feel his breath. The lightened air made him feel nervous again.

“…and is it really all right?”

A low, heated voice shook my body. Craig’s thin, blonde hair brushed up against Shun’s bangs. Knowing that he was trying to look at him from above, Shun couldn’t look up.

“I told you it was!”

“Really, strange guy…”

“Whatever,” he replied futilely, and Craig’s arms wound around him and pulled Shun into a hug.

“Ah, hey.”

Suddenly, he turned red. No, he thought he’d been red for a while now, but his cheeks were feeling even hotter. He tried to complain, but he was muffled by Craig’s chest and the hands around him.

“I owe you a favor.”

Craig rubbed his forehead gently against Shun’s hair. Shun was unable to say anything.

To be honest, Shun was feeling hesitant about his outrageous proposal. However, Craig’s shoulders that he was very close to trembled a little, and his uncertainty cleared away.

It was okay until the heroine appeared. He can be the substitute for her. If only he could alleviate this man’s suffering a little.

Shun didn’t know how long they were like that. Soon, Craig loosened his arms, and he looked up at him, their eyes meeting.

“Well then, I’m going to go back and get back to sleep now.”

Shun turned away and was grabbed by the arm as soon as he hastily stood up.

“You can’t go home this late, can you? What are you going to do?”

Craig frowned anxiously. It felt like it had been a long time since Shun had seen that face. Now that he was thinking about it, didn’t Craig tell him to sleep in this room earlier?

Shun laughed, saying, “It’s all right.”

“I was told I could use Gin’s bed, and that’s where I’ll be.”

Shun was forced back into the bed with arms wrapped around his waist from behind him, and there was a voice that sounded like he might be disqualified from “acting heroine” soon.

“… sleep here.”

Craig said with a very displeased face against his back.

“But-“

“You don’t have to go all the way back.”

It was true that it would be troublesome to go back now, and since so many things had already happened that evening, he wanted to sleep right then. However, Shun was going to sleep in Craig’s room.

“Craig is going to sleep here with me, right?”

“What?”

His response was bigger than expected. It seemed that Craig had intended to return to the dungeon.

“It’s cold there, isn’t it?”

Shun hated imagining Craig, sitting on his front legs in such a cold, dark, and lonely place while waiting for time to pass.

“Besides, you don’t… have the urge to do it with whoever anymore, right?”

Shun couldn’t make himself say it clearly, and his eyes swam. Craig responded without losing his sour expression.

“No matter who it is, I don’t.”

“Then let’s sleep in a warm blanket.”

Craig finally laid back down next to him with an energetic thump. If he doesn’t consciously pretend to be innocent, he would be returned to the cold.

“You… do you know why I told you not to approach only you?”

He asked, half-threateningly, to Shun’s dismay.

“Because I don’t have the strength or magic comparable to the other members, so I wouldn’t be able to fight back if attacked?”

Shun certainly couldn’t fight back. He kept this supplementary information to himself.

Shun had had absolute confidence in his answers, but it seemed that it was wrong. Craig pushed up his bangs with a low groan.

“You haven’t done anything. I don’t think you have to beat yourself up over it like that.”

The embarrassing suggestion Shun had made earlier was because he couldn’t bear to think of Craig in there. Returning to the prison because of Shun was too much for him to take.

Craig’s eyes widened at Shun’s words. However, he quickly averted his gaze and turned his head away.

If he didn’t like Shun being next to him, then so be it.

“Then I’m going to sleep in Gin’s bed.”

“That’s no good.”

Craig still seemed to be mulling things over, but as soon as he said this, he grabbed Shun’s arms and held him back. What kind of danger was there in Gin’s bed?

“… Damn, I see.”

Realizing that he wasn’t going to budge, Craig gave up and grabbed another blanket that was by the fire. The fire was extinguished; the magic lamp turned off; and the room was enveloped in darkness.

“Go to sleep.”

“Uh-huh.”

Shun laid back down with his blanket, and Craig laid next to him. He had his back turned to Shun though.

Even though he had been the one to suggest it, he was really sleeping in the same bed as someone that he just made an amazing promise to. It was ridiculously awkward when he thought about it like that.

Shun tried not to worry about it and closed his eyes. He was awake for a while with tension and excitement, but he still felt tired. His eyelids grew heavier and heavier.

Shun turned over and bumped up against Craig while looking for a good position. He breathed in surprise, and in the next moment, he felt fluffy fur against his cheek. Shun opened his eyes and found a big wolf next to him. For some reason, he seemed to have a sour expression.

“Why did you become a wolf?”

“There’s a lot of reasons!”

When Shun asked him while half-asleep, he was scolded with a growl. You can talk in your wolf form?

Shun gave up on hearing the answer and closed his eyes again. Craig had mentioned that he had more control over several things when he became a wolf, but Shun wondered what he was holding back this time.

Come to think of it, Shun felt like he had forgotten something. However, he couldn’t recall it and fell asleep.

Chapter 19: Trembling Night

Shun woke up from a warm dizziness when he heard a crackling sound.

Another burst of orange sprung up from the firewood in Shun’s view that he could see from where he was lying on a soft object. He was surrounded by unfamiliar furnishings and a fireplace. Where on earth is this place!? Shun slowly sat up without thinking.

“You’re awake?”

He was surprised by the low, sweet voice, and he saw Craig sitting in a chair beside the bed.

He was wearing a collarless shirt, belt and trousers. Why was he dressed so casually and beside Shun’s bed?

“Well…?”

When he raised his hand to brush his bangs out of his eyes, the blanket slipped down and exposed his bare shoulders.

…why is he naked?

A confused expression spread across Shun’s face. However, he remembered everything when he met Craig’s sullen expression.

“Ahhh!”

He turned bright red and quickly wrapped the blanket tighter around himself. He felt like his head was going to explode.

Above all, he didn’t want to stay naked. Let’s get dressed. Let’s put on pants. Then he can think about everything else.

“…Here.”

As Shun was digging through the sheets with a single-minded focus, clothes were held out toward him from the side. Of course, they were from Craig, and Shun reached for them despite his nervousness.

Although Shun thought he was used to the complicated royal clothing, there were still so many useless layers that it took a lot of time to put it on. Neither of them said a word, and the uncomfortable air was filled with the sounds of a crackling fire and rustling clothing.

The buttons on his shirt were hardly functional. He put on his jacket, finished tightening his belt, and reddened when he realized something. He was clean. The sheets hadn’t felt uncomfortable.

“Craig, did you clean up?”

When he asked this while touching his belly, Craig looked away and confirmed his thoughts.

“Well, thank you.”

Craig really looked at Shun this time. There was a subtle expression on his handsome face.

“What you should be saying is not ‘thank you’, but a complaint.”

“What? Huh… Oh, sure! Why did that happen!? Is it because you’re a wolf?”

Once Craig pointed that out, it seemed like Shun’s brain finally started working. At the same time, he was feeling a bit ashamed and his voice grew faster.

“Explain it properly.”

Craig rose from his chair. In contrast to the quiet movement, Shun retreated back toward the bed.

Craig laughed a little when he saw his reaction. It was a self-deprecating laugh that left no choice but to give up. Shun’s heart ached.

“I’m really sorry. I won’t do anything to you. …can I sit next to you?”

Shun had no choice but to nod in response to his sincere voice. A little bit away from Shun, Craig sat down on the bed.

“I’m from the Wolf Country,” he began. As Shun had remembered from the game, his name was Craig Thurwolf, the First Prince of the Wolf Country. He was supposed to be dead and ran away alone, but Dian later followed him.

He calmly described his known background from the game.

“Have you ever read the myth of the Wolf Country?”

“If it’s the same as the picture book in the living room.”

Craig nodded that that was enough to understand.

“Then you should have seen the same symbol as this.”

Craig unlaced the collar of his shirt and moved it to show the black mark underneath his right collarbone. Shun couldn’t clearly remember it from the heat of the moment, but now that he was looking at it again, it was certainly the same symbol as the one on the back cover of the book.

At first glance, it looked like a highly detailed cone-shaped mark, but the longer he looked the more it looked like the face of a wolf. Furthermore, the teeth and crescent shaped eyes that look like they had enough power to kill were raised by sharp lines.

“Oh, yeah. There was.”

Shun acknowledged what he said, noticing a trace of fear stirring in him that he hadn’t felt when he had looked at it on the picture book. Craig tied the collar of his shirt closed again without saying anything else.

It was different from the national emblem of the Wolf Country, which combined the wolf face with a bow and arrows. It went without saying that the national emblem represented their God, the founder, but then Craig has that.

“The reason why I left my country was because this symbol appeared on me in the winter when I was fifteen and turned into a wolf. It’s the symbol of the wolf that must be slain.”

It was an answer that Shun felt like he was better off not knowing.

“The knowledge of this is only passed down to the royal family — no, the history the public is told is completely different. The True King could not subdue the werewolf. On the contrary, he was consumed by greed and signed a contract with him for eternal wealth and prosperity on the condition that every thirty-third generation become his yorishiro1.”

   1. I don’t really think there’s a good word to translate this to. A yorishiro, in this context, would basically be a vessel maybe? On wikipedia it says it’s an object capable of attracting spirits called kami, thus giving them a physical space to occupy during religious ceremonies. The word itself literally means approach substitute.

“You mean Craig is the 33rd…?”

He couldn’t stop himself from asking this. Craig’s explanation was as quiet as if he were reading a story. But Shun’s heart was beating fast.

“I don’t know the exact truth because I was stopped in the middle of learning it, but I can transform into a wolf. This mark is more than enough proof than anything else. When I turn into a wolf, my magical powers also double. I’m beyond the realm of ordinary men.”

Craig, whose fingers fidgeted in front of his chest, had that self-deprecating smile on his face again. Shun didn’t like it all for some reason.

“Even if you say that, you’re normally rational and human. It’s very different from the wild and frivolous creature described in the book.”

“For now.”

Those words rendered Shun speechless.

“It’s true that at present I can turn back into a human being of my own volition, but the wolf has its own ego. I have control for now, but I don’t know how long it will last.”

A silence fell.

Shun wanted to argue with him, but he had no knowledge or information to refute anything. Craig’s golden eyes scrutinized Shun’s forlorn expression.

“The main reason I left the country was because when the full moon arrived, so did something else… estrus.”

Craig looked like a child waiting to be scolded.

The red glow of the fireplace illuminated his golden hair and his cheeks. Shun recalled the heavy lock that he had accidentally opened. If he truly had his reason and wits and was able to freely turn back into a human, then why was he locked in that prison as if he needed to be punished while in the form of a wolf?

“A wolf’s magical power increases as the moon waxes. With this increase in strength, their appetite and sexual desire increases as well. It becomes more and more difficult to maintain reason at this time. When in the form of the wolf, I can suppress those feelings since it takes more energy to maintain the form, and thus, also lowering the interest I have in others.”

Craig turned his gaze meaningfully at Shun.

“What?”

“If I remember who I am, I’ll turn back. Like when you called my name.”

“Ah, I see…”

Shun couldn’t even look directly at Craig, and his eyes wandered around his knees. In retrospect, it was true that Craig, while in wolf form, was the very image of a perfect gentleman, carrying Shun to this room and giving him back his lost bracelet.

It had all suddenly changed when Shun called his name, and he returned to his human form. Shun’s cheeks almost flushed again, and he hurriedly proceeded.

“Is that why there are no female members?”

“Well.”

When he had heard that they didn’t let women join, he had thought there was someone in it that hated women or they had just decided not to. But was this the actual reason? There was no way any young lady could capture him.

Shun was finding it difficult to understand the world setting of the game that he wished he could play it again. The prince was a wolf (literally).

What did they mean by putting such a serious setting into a game that was supposed to heal women tired of society that were looking to be put under continuous pursuit with kabedons and one-liners?

Why is Craig the only one carrying such a heavy burden? Let alone, the “dangerous and risky” game title? How does the heroine give this man a happy ending?

After thinking about it this far, Shun suddenly realized something.

“That… is there a way to cure, or well, solve it?”

Yes, there’s a HE2. Shun was unable to clear it, but Craig’s HE route existed. It was good news for Craig, but Shun was unable to mention it. That was because…

   2. HE – happy ending, usually refers to good/best ending you can get in an otome game

“I’ve been looking into several things with Dian. I’m sure it’ll be alright.”

The corners of Craig’s lips raised with a bright expression.

There was a route for Craig to be happy. However, it had nothing to do with Shun. It was the heroine that finds him and becomes happy with him.

“Don’t look like that.”

“Huh?”

When Shun looked up, he saw Craig’s anxious eyes. Shun hadn’t even realized that he was making an unhappy expression.

Shun should be happy that he was going to be happy, but he can’t help but feel like there was a thorn in his heart. His chest felt like it was being hollowed out.

“Next time I’ll make sure that no more harm comes to you. I’ll make sure it’s even more closely quarantined than now, and you won’t have to worry about it.”

Shun couldn’t immediately react to Craig’s harsh voice. Craig smiled, pointing toward something else.

Shun felt guilty and hated himself. Craig, however, received Shun’s expression in a different way.

“No, I wasn’t thinking about that.”

He wanted to deny it, but he couldn’t find the words. Craig reassured Shun, who couldn’t explain the misunderstanding, that it wouldn’t happen again.

“I’m really sorry… but I was also saved by you. Thank you.”

Craig gave him an awkward and embarrassed look. Shun blinked at his unexpected thanks.

“I saved you?”

“That’s right. Even when in wolf form, it’s hard to suppress it. Doing it alone doesn’t do anything, so I had no choice but to hold in the impulse until the full moon begins to wane. But thanks to Shun, tonight I am calm enough to speak properly like this. …I can’t even restrain myself in human form, and I didn’t know what I was doing, so I’m sure it was hard on Shun.”

“No, I’m not saying it was bad, I’m just saying, I don’t want it to happen like that again…”

Shun was in a panic when he recalled what had happened several hours ago. He opened his eyes slowly and looked at Craig.

Didn’t the handsome man in front of him say something that he couldn’t ignore just now?

“Can I ask you something very out of place?”

“…what?”

Craig nervously nodded in response to Shun’s serious expression.

He had cut off all of his involvement with women. He didn’t want to put his hands on them, and he said that he had no clue about love. That meant…

“Then, you mean…”

Shun cleared his throat. Craig choked as if he had been caught.

“I mean! You’re a virgin, too!”

“………what?”

Chapter 18: The True Meaning of Checks and Balances

WARNING: This chapter contains NSFW (R18) content. If you would like to skip it, it’s the whole chapter! The whole chapter is spicy! Don’t read it! I’m begging you.

Something soft and hot touched his lips.

The moment Shun realized he was being kissed, their lips parted before meeting once again.

“Wait, what… Mm!”

At last, Shun decided that this was the sort of situation he should be resisting and cried out. Their kiss deepened as if to keep him from speaking anymore.

Craig’s wet tongue intertwined with Shun’s, and every part of Shun’s mouth felt connected to Craig’s.1 His body temperature rose rapidly for the first time.

   1. I don’t find mucous membranes very sexy so here’s an adlib semi-similar thing I think? It went something like “their mucous membranes were connected” I really didn’t know how to describe it since that part is like your whole mouth bit/tongue or something.

With his lips captured, Craig’s long fingers unhooked his collar. Shun’s jacket and shirt had all been loosely buttoned up before bedtime. However, instead of dealing with them, Craig pulls at his shirt with enough force that the buttons pop off.

“Ah, Craig!”

Shun managed to twist around and turn his back to Craig to escape. His lips were released with very little resistance when he gasped out, but there was no answer. Craig climbed over Shun’s back, burying his face into the exposed neck. There was a bit of pain, and Shun realized he had been bitten. It felt a little nice. Soft, blonde hair tickled his ears, and roughly exhaled warm breath puffed up around his neck. The weight pressed against his back is hot and heavy. Shun attempted to escape it, but his body was too strong, and he didn’t move much.

Craig’s lips and tongue traveled down his exposed, white back reaching his shoulder blades when his large hands slipped inside Shun’s torn shirt, groping and teasing his chest. Craig’s long, soft fingers found his exposed nipples, and Shun trembled so much that the bed shook.

A hot breath leaked from Craig’s mouth, moistening Shun’s skin. It was like he was being laughed at.

Shun’s cheeks flushed. The sweet, numbing sensation that came from his chest traveled all the way to his waist. Shun held his hands over his mouth in a desperate attempt to hold back his voice. But it soon became futile.

“Hey! That’s… ah!”

Just as Craig gently bit his earlobe, his tongue slipped against his unprotected ear. A wet, indecent sound resounded loudly in his ear. A voice that could only be described as cute leaked from between Shun’s fingers.

Shun hadn’t known that his chest and ears were so sensitive, even though it was really his entire body. His whole body was covered from behind, and Shun’s ignorance was exposed.

“Hm, mm… ah!”

Shun was flipped back onto his back, and he faced Craig once more before Craig leaned down, capturing one of his nipples with his mouth. The warm and wet mouth teased him, and a feeling he couldn’t resist rose up from his lower limbs. His hands that had been pushing back against Craig’s broad shoulders had lost their strength and could only grasp at his clothes.

“Mm.”

The lips that met his again were hot, and Craig’s skilled, wet tongue entangled with his and stole his breath. His heart beat annoyingly loud in his ears, and he could feel Craig’s own loud heartbeat as well.

Shun began to wonder why he wasn’t resisting. Every kiss and touch that Craig gave him was irresistible, and he wanted to immerse himself in that feeling.

Craig exhaled deeply once before naturally sliding his hand down against Shun’s trousers.

“Wait! Wait!”

When Shun regained his rationality, he quickly sat up and grabbed Craig’s hand. However, he was quickly shaken off and pushed back into the sheets. His lips were reclaimed, and Shun helplessly accepted Craig’s probing tongue.

There were various questions filling Shun’s mind, such as why Craig was a wolf in the first place, or why he was attacking Shun. However there would be no answer, only the sloppy sounds of kisses on his ears. His thoughts grew more and more distracted.

Despite having a little trouble with the finely crafted, belt buckle, Craig soon freed Shun from his pants and underwear. The smooth texture of the sheet fabric was a bit cold against his bare skin.

“Hm, ah…!”

Shun attempted to turn away at the shock of the touch at his most sensitive place. Unfortunately, he was obstructed by the disheveled sheets and the large body that hovered over him. Adrenaline rushed through his veins. His heat that had already begun to grow from before rose completely for Craig.

“Oh, oh…! Ah!”

Every time a long finger moved over him, heat built up inside of him. This was the first time he had ever been touched by someone, and Shun’s voice flowed out uncontrollably. Soon the wet sounds began to grow louder, and the the erogenous feeling increased even more with his own sense of shame. Shun felt so good that he was certain that he was going crazy.

Even though he wasn’t feeling sad, tears gathered in the corners of his eyes as if looking for a place to escape. He was clinging tightly to Craig’s back before he even realized.

“Ah, that’s why I told you to stay away…”

Shun looked up at Craig’s word that seemed to blame Shun, or rather, himself. Craig’s handsome face, reflected in his moist eyes, was very distorted. He misunderstood Shun’s tears as caused by fear and pain. Shun realized vaguely.

“You’re kind…”

Despite his uncontrollable breathing, Shun managed mutter this involuntarily. His thoughts were a mess, but he was sure of this.

Craig was a kind person. When he realized that this might happen, he tried to keep Shun away. All of his mysterious words and actions suddenly made sense.

Craig’s eyes widened for a moment, and he immediately laughed in a self-deprecating way. His smile was so bitter that Shun was at a loss for words.

“What are you saying in this situation?”

“Craig…”

Shun’s thighs were pressed opened with a leg, and he breathed quietly. He could feel the large thing pressing against him, and he had no choice but to accept how excited Craig was by this situation. At the same time, the movement of his hands resumed more intensely than before. It was if he was refusing to hear anything that Shun had to say anymore.

“Hmm, ah, hmm… nh! Ah!”

His back bounced several times under the fierce movement. Shun was a little afraid of his own reaction because all he could think about was pursuing that growing feeling inside of him. The only kiss Craig gave him was gentle.

“Oh, oh –!”

With his arms around Craig’s strong neck and their lips pressed together, Shun climaxed. His floating body sunk back into the sheets again, the fibers rubbing against his shoulder blades. The sound of his heart beat was so loud. Shun looked up at Craig, dumbfounded and floating in the afterglow.

Leaving Shun on the bed, Craig violently pulled off his clothes, tossing them to the floor.

His well-proportioned body was beautiful and statuesque. There was something that looked like a black tattoo on his right collarbone. It had a design with several acute angles, but Shun couldn’t even think about dedicating it to memory.

His hot, passionate gaze was irresistible, and Shun’s heart leapt when he met Craig’s eyes, knowing it was too late. Shun was kissed more times than he could count, and he no longer knew which way was up. His body trembled again.

Craig’s tongue teased his own, and Craig’s skin was so hot that he was reminded that they were not finished yet. Contrary to his greedy kiss, Craig slowly touched his shaft this time. The room was filled with a wet sound, and as Shun realized this was because of him, he almost died of embarrassment.

“Ah….”

A hot, wet tip rubbed up against Shun’s inner thigh, and he felt like it was even bigger than before and felt himself growing excited again. Craig lifted Shun’s waist, slipping a finger behind him. The wet finger easily found the spot it was looking for and began to tease the entrance. Shun, suddenly feeling an unfamiliar feeling, was seized with fear.

“No, stop! Don’t!”

Shun understood what Craig was trying to do and resisted. It was too unknown and scary there.

He shook his head and looked up at Craig, his face wet with tears and sweat. That was the most resistance he had shown so far, and the initiative was entirely on him.

Craig removed his finger with a single breath.

“I’m sorry, but bear with me a little longer.”

“Oh…. nh, ah!”

Craig wrapped a hand around the both of them and began to rub them simultaneously. The pair of different size and color pressed and rubbed up against each other with the movement of his palm. An intense feeling spread all across his body.

The both of them leaked with excitement against each other and made obscene sounds. Shun closed his eyes at the sinful sight. However, there was no escape, and Craig’s rough, laborious breath ghosted across his ear, and heat crept along his spine.

The rough, calluses on Craig’s palm stimulated Shun’s most sensitive spots. The thought of it being because of Craig’s sword training made his trembling grow worse again.

“Ah, don’t do that…! I’m going to cum again…”

His tip was given even more attention at his words, and Shun opened his eyes. His bangs were glued to his forehead sexily, and Shun’s heart jumped at the sight.

The warm, amber irises now only reflected Shun in them.

“Ah! Nn, Mm…!!”

Pleasure surged up through him. His vision blurred, and his hips moved on their own.

Shun didn’t understand anything.

However, he didn’t want to be seen like this by Craig’s golden eyes, so he curled an arm around Craig’s neck and pressed their lips together. After a moment of hesitation, Craig hugged Shun painfully tight.

In the boiling heat, he heard Craig’s growling voice and felt something hot splash against his stomach. It mixed with Shun’s and slowly flowed down his body towards the sheets. Shun shuddered at the feeling of the thick liquid.

Chapter 17: Do You Like Beautiful Wolves?

“…the die is just a regular one. There’s no magic, right?”

Let’s go again! Shun pulled on Gin’s sleeve and whispered in his ear. For some reason, he was kept at a distance.

“My salary might decrease, so please, don’t get so close to me… dice?”

Shun didn’t know how that would effect his pay but nodded at his suggestion. Gin hid it with his body, so that it wouldn’t be seen by the other person and pointed his thumb at the full table where Dougray was seated.

“It’s not only the dice, but it shouldn’t be possible to cast any magic in casinos. If cheating goes unchecked, they’ll go under immediately. This casino also employs a few skilled magicians to prevent anyone from casting spells. And there it is.”

Gin, who sat back in the chair, pointed to the corner of the table. Clear stones were fitted into the four corners of a beautifully polished wooden structure.

“It’s a magic sealing stone. In contrast to the magic stones that work as a catalyst or a substitute, it weakens or invalidates magical power. The stone is embedded into tables and at key points in the casino. It costs a lot of money, but it’s riskier to not have it.”

Shun was able to find the stones in all four corners of the table. Now that he was looking, he noticed that all the dealers wore transparent brooches on their chests. Was it to protect them from anyone who might try to attack them with magic?

They were broken when the magic was used went beyond its limit, but at that point, the use of it was exposed, so defensive measures could be taken. Although Shun understood it, he couldn’t explain the discomfort he felt. Shun turned his gaze back to the table a few meters away.

“It’s a simple game where you roll a six-sided die and guess the sum, right? It looks like they’re rolling three dice right now, but I think the odds are a bit strange.”

“The odds?”

“The chance of getting eight is seven out of seventy-two rolls, but you’ve rolled it eighteen times, and hit eight three times. The chance of hitting sixteen is four out of thirty-six rolls, and you’ve hit it four times.”

“I don’t know what you’re saying.”

Shun continued to stare at the table without noticing Gin, who was keeping his distance from him again, further deepening his suspicions. This time the roll was one, one and one, equaling three. This was the second time this had been rolled even thought the chance of it happening was only one out of twenty-six rolls.

“With three six-sided dice, the common denominator is 216, or six to the third power.”

“Is that a long story?”

“And when the figures are suspicious, Dougray is betting a lot of money on them.”

“…really?”

Soon after Shun pointed this out, a large number of chips were drawn to Dougray.

“If we can figure out the trick, we might be able to get them to back off of Carolina.”

Gin was stunned for a few seconds by Shun, who laughed at him, and he made a slight face and said, “You’re surprisingly brave, aren’t you?”

For the time being, it was getting too late into the night, and Shun was about to leave when he stood up and bumped into someone. In front of him was a brown-skinned man with long, dark brown eyes and visible scars on his forehead.

His glossy, black hair was tied up behind him that seemed about the same color as Shun’s, and he cut a very handsome, Latin figure.

No matter how it looked, the man, who was obviously from a noble background, did not react at all to Shun’s apology but also did not ignore him, simply looking him up and down from twenty centimeters above Shun.

“Uh, do you need something…?”

Shun takes half a step back, wondering if he would be asked for compensation or something. From next to him, Gin quietly put his hand on Shun’s waist.

The man’s gaze ran over Shun from head to toe as if he was licking him. It was as if he was being evaluated, and he was horrified.

“…no, you just looked similar to an acquaintance of mine. Excuse me.”

The man left with a frighteningly gentle smile. His back disappeared into the crowd, and Shun breathed out. He had apparently been quite nervous.

“I thought the curse had been invoked.”

Next to him, Gin let go of his waist. His tone was light, but his eyebrows were creased. Perhaps because he was being careful.

“I don’t know how to describe that feeling, but I’m not a free spirit. Don’t get too close to anyone that you don’t know.”

Shun quietly nodded in response to Gin’s unusually serious advice.

***

Shun stood like an idiot in his usual workplace, in the living room of the Dawn Fog’s hideout.

I’ll give you special permission to use my bed! Gin had left him with a smile so refreshing that he wanted to hit him, and it had only been three minutes since Gin had left. When Shun had asked him what happened to his promise to take Shun to a safe place, he had replied that the hideout was protected by Craig’s even more tight protection spell after the attack and so had fulfilled his promise. That was not what Shun thought.

…but, oh well. After many twists and turns, Gin had managed to win the right to have a drink with the casino sister that night. Shun could understand why he couldn’t be bothered with him.

Naturally, there was no one in the living room. When he looked over at his desk, feeling a bit nervous about the unusual atmosphere, he saw a few cinnamon candies next to his abacus. They always appeared on his desk every three days, and it made Shun smile. He went back toward the nap room with renewed determination to do his best to help Evan.

Although he said it was Gin’s bed, it wasn’t really his property, but Shun knew which one to use amongst all the beds. Shun didn’t want to sleep in clothes that weren’t clean and smelt like cigarettes, but he didn’t have a change of clothes either, so he had no choice but to wear his prince clothing after taking a shower. As long as Shun didn’t see anyone, there wouldn’t be any problems. Plus, he had to go back to the castle in the morning.

Shun felt a little heavy when he remembered the events from the morning. An energetic elderly person would get up early in the morning. In Japan, he felt like his governor was an active old man, who would be rubbing dry cloth since around four o’clock.

As expected, it was cold when he got out of the shower. He took a blanket from the nap room and wrapped it around himself and went to make a warm, herbal tea.

“Right, what did that mean?”

Shun remembered something from an adage that someone had told him about that while he was reading out of boredom. “Li” must have been a peach tree. A Korean language teacher and a Chinese literature enthusiast that had sat next to him once had taught him. In other words, his words were probably derived from Chinese historical events. There was also a far East country similar to China mentioned in the game, and it may have been translated into words Shun could understand.

In summary, Don’t do anything suspicious. The old man’s first punch was a direct hit.

Feeling dizzy, Shun found himself heading toward the kitchen to leave his cup. There was light leaking from Craig’s study. Did he come back while Shun was in the shower?

“Craig? Are you there?”

He stretched back and knocked on the door three times. There was no response, and the result was the same when he called out. When he was about to leave, he heard a small noise from inside.

“Craig?”

Shun opened the door nervously. There was only one, milky white indirect light attached to a section of the wall. He looked around the dim room, but there was no one inside. Craig was supposed to be out of town, so the noise had to be his imagination. As he concluded this, he turned his back toward the light. The shadow of it was reflected back on the door. The only shadow in it belonged to Shun.

“… eh?”

Shun could see two horns on a large, round head.

What’s this?

There was no one in front of the light earlier. No, he couldn’t have just seen it. He suddenly remembered the cover of a book that had been forced on him by his former governor. It disappeared and attacked people from behind.

As if roots had grown from Shun’s feet, he stood still as the shadow grew bigger and bigger in his field of vision.

“Eek!”

Suddenly Shun felt a weight on his shoulders and with a pathetic cry, he fell backwards. He closed his eyes in shock. Something jumped on his chest while he was lying there on his back.

There was a cold and wet feeling on his nose. Something similar to hair tickled his cheek. It was very small… and light.

“Meow.”

When Shun opened his eyes, Sui looked down at him mysteriously from his chest. She looked calm as if she was asking what he was doing.

“Oh, it’s you!”

Was he feeling relieved, frustrated, or ashamed of himself for being frightened? Shun placed his hand on Sui’s side and pressed his head against her fluffy belly. Oh, it’s fluffy and comfortable. However, Sui stuck her front foot out against Shun’s cheek and stopped him.

“Well, good night.”

Shun put her down on the floor and pat her head. Whether she was listening or not, Sui began to clean up her disheveled belly that had been caused by Shun.

“Oh no.”

The knot on the bracelet that Craig had given him was coming loose. Maybe he should retie it.

“Hey, come on!”

Sui, who jumped at Shun, now held it in her mouth and rushed into the study. She dodged Shun’s hand, pushing with her forefoot and disappeared into the small gap between the illumination stone and the wall.

Something moved under the rug with a low rumble. Sui jumped under the rug and the shape of her body disappeared at a certain point.

Shun hastily pulled up the rug and found a square whole through which a large man could pass through if he pushed himself. There were stairs leading down the dimly lit hole, and in the distance, Sui’s tail was waving.

“There was a secret passage here…”

Shun thought it might be the passage to the door where the safe was where he had been led while blindfolded, but during the recent attack, the ruffians had not entered this room.

If so, then what was ahead?

He would be lying if he said he wasn’t scared, but he couldn’t lose the bracelet Craig had given him. He also didn’t think Sui would go into a dangerous place. Shun thought so and hurried down the stairs.

At the bottom of the stairs was a simple, paved road. It was wide, and the ceiling was high. There were iron tracks for moving a cart. Was this previously a mine or something? Although it didn’t look like it had been used recently, the orange magic stones that hung from the ceiling managed to keep some visibility.

Sui’s tail was no longer visible. However, since it was a one-way path, it didn’t matter. He needed to hurry up and call for her loudly. It couldn’t be helped that he was scared.

When Shun felt like he had walked more than enough, he found the tiger-striped tail he had been looking for. Sui was looking at him with her front legs aligned in front of her as if she had been waiting for him. Shun saw the bracelet at her feet.

When he hurried over to pick it up, Shun thought she would play with it, and then the cream colored paw rolled it away.

“Ah, you’re a little prankster.”

After several more attempts, the bracelet is finally back in his possession. Sui yawned, unbothered by Shun’s words. Apart from when she was asking for food, Sui usually didn’t do much to annoy anyone. So this was unlike her, but she was an unrestrained cat, to which Shun could only laugh wryly.

Fortunately, there was not a single scratch on the golden stone. Shun decided he would put it back on after he returned to the living room with a sigh of relief and ended up placing it in his chest pocket. When he looked back to pick Sui up to go back, she was no where to be seen.

“…wait, which way did I come from…?”

When Shun confirmed his surroundings, he realized that he had come to a three-way path, with one path to the right and two to the left.

“Idiot…!”

Shun held his hands up in anguish. As he tried to remember the characteristics of the road that he had come from, they all seemed to be the same to his drunken mind thanks to how uniformly dark with the width and appearance so thoroughly uniform. To make matters worse, the cold underground air was unbearable to his body after his bath.

For now, Shun had no choice but to move forward. He marked his current location with a rock and decided to go down a path after marking an arrow toward it.

He walked for five or six minutes, but he became increasingly uneasy as the same scenery continued to repeat. Just as Shun was about to turn back, he heard something along the way. His footsteps quickened as he wondered if it was Sui. However, she was gone, and the road ended in a dead end.

Well, not exactly. The road continued on, but a number of metal bars from the ceiling to the ground blocked the way.

A dungeon. The word quickly sprung to mind.

The gaps between the bars were as wide as Sui. In other words, it was used to lock up something bigger than a human being.

Shun’s heart started beating faster, but nothing happened. He also couldn’t hear anything.

When I approached the dark gate, there was nothing inside but a cool darkness.

There was a very large lock around Shun’s waist. He had never seen such a large padlock.

Shun thought it would be heavy and lifted it out of curiosity. He felt something like static electricity in his palm.

Then something unbelievable happened. In his hands, the lock came off with a dull sound.

“…huh?”

The rusty door opened forwards. As Shun stepped back instinctively, he heard the sound of the hard soles of his boots stepping on pebbles. The lock was kept with magic, and Shun had unlocked it, though he wasn’t sure how.

He could hear something breathing. Two glowing eyes floated in the darkness.

Shun stood there.

He could barely tell that it was on four legs. From what he could see, it also seemed to be three times the size of a large dog from Shun’s world. It slowly emerged from the darkness.

A big dog with hair that seemed to be a blend between silver and gold… no, it was a wolf.

“Hee.”

Shun, who had been paralyzed by surprise, rallied his whole body, turned heel, and ran away as fast as he could.

However his feet were tangled with fear, and he almost tripped over them again and again, and he was slow. The prison door banged open behind him. Shun turned around to look without thinking. The giant wolf, now completely released from its cage, bent itself and in the next moment, flew towards me.

“You’re chasing me?? Why?!”

He turned forward again and ran with all his might. However, no matter how hard he ran, the animal’s presence did not fade away at all. On the contrary, every moment, it became more and more imminent. In the first place, no human being could outrun a quadruped beast in a sprint. Moreover, it would’ve been better if he had some muscular strength.

“Whoa!”

Shun’s foot was caught in a cart recess, and he fell over. He stretched his arms out in a hurry to quickly get up, but when he raised his head, all his blood drained away.

The wolf was right in front of him.

Before Shun knew it, the beast, who had overtaken him, stepped forward without a sound and approached Shun with its nose.

Ha… ha… Shun was out of breath, and his throat tasted like blood. The wolf’s eyes were so golden they seemed like they could see through anything, and his sharp, carnivorous teeth were fast approaching.

Maybe he was sniffing him to check if he was delicious. Shun’s brain, in an extreme condition, judged this to be the case.

“I don’t taste good! I really don’t! Ever since I came to this world, I’ve being only meat and dairy products, not a good combination! Ok, I’ve been eating vegetables too, but I’ve also had mayonnaise and ponzu and aojiso1 dressing!”

   1. Ponzu is a citrus-based sauce commonly used in Japanese cuisine. It is tart, with a thin, watery consistency and a dark brown color. Aojiso dressing is a refreshing Japanese-style dressing with a moderate acidity, made with “Aojiso” exquisitely and seasoned with brewed vinegar and soy sauce as a base with plum meat, lemon juice, and extracts.

In the middle of Shun’s declaration, the wolf lifted Shun up by the back collar of his clothes. Bushy hair and warm breath grazed his nape. He got goosebumps down his spine.

Shun was lifted up like a kitten, and the wolf started walking.

He had thought his throat was going to be bitten. However there wasn’t a single abnormality except for the pain in his neck. Shun was a bit relieved at first, but now that he was thinking about it more carefully he was less grateful.

He was getting taken back to be eaten slowly…!

Shun was in despair. It was many times better for him to be offed without a single thought here.

Shun might have, under normal circumstances, thrown off his clothes, and noticed that the direction that the wolf was carrying him in was in a different direction from his “burrow”, that is, the dungeon. But all Shun was able to do was express his regret over the memories that flowed through him like a light.

He wanted to thank Craig properly and apologize. He also wanted to get along with him better, even without the heroine. He wanted to say goodbye to Gin, Evan, and everyone else who helped him. And…

“I want to eat aojiso dressing… or rather, white rice. I want to eat some salted rice balls.”

Shun felt a huff of breath against the nape of his neck. It was like the wolf was laughing at him.

About five minutes passed, and he was still alive and wondering when he was going to be put on the dinner table. An empty road opened up and a familiar staircase appeared. The wolf went up the stairs with Shun in his mouth.

Shun didn’t notice when he ran down after Sui, but the stairs were forked in the middle. The wolf went up the second set of stairs that led somewhere other than Craig’s study.

It was a calm gait. Shun hoped the wolf doesn’t feel the desire to return to its den as soon as possible to eat to Shun. He hoped it didn’t feel it. He had been in such a cold prison with no food or water, so it should make more sense for it to be excited about its first meal in a while.

It was so frightening that on the contrary, his mind was becoming more and more clear. Was the beast that was holding Shun the demon wolf from the tales of the Butterfly Country, the sacred wolf from the Wolf Country, or the werewolf that should have been killed?

The wolf stopped walking. The ceiling appeared as it came to a dead end. The wolf shook its head and gave a howl.

Then, a large door opened with a creaking sound appeared and slowly opened. Once again, Shun was lifted by the wolf’s mouth, and they entered a room filled with soft light.

Shun was lowered down onto the plush carpet, and the first thing he saw was a large, tidy bookshelf and a large, wooden, queen-sized bed. The style of the carpet and furnishings were similar to what was in Craig’s study. It smelled good and calming.

The wolf approached the fireplace and let out a long huff. Then an orange fire appeared in the piled firewood and began to burn slowly. It was a familiar movement that made it seem as if it had always done this.

“…is this your den?”

Did the wolves in this world sleep in beds? Shun looked around the room that was warming up and asked the wolf without thinking.

The wolf’s amber eyes slowly turned to Shun. He suddenly remembered the situation he was in, where he couldn’t read its emotions.

“Ah, um, it’s not good! I haven’t eaten onions lately, so my blood is muddy!?”

When he backed away with a line that was probably meaningless, he got caught on the edge of the bed and fell onto his back. When he hurriedly looked up, he saw a wolf’s nose in front of him.

In its mouth was the bracelet he received from Craig.

Shun immediately put his hand inside his breast pocket, but it was empty. He must have dropped it when he fell a little while ago.

“Did… you pick it up by any chance?”

After sitting on the bed for a long time, Shun finally managed to ask the question. It was the only answer he could think of, but was there really such a kind wolf?

The wolf did not answer, but it looked at Shun’s hand that was still inside his breast pocket. He reflexively held his hand out before him, feeling like he had been told to do so. He seemed to have been right and the wolf pressed the bracelet against Shun’s hand with its nose.

“Thank you…”

The wolf still said nothing and stared at Shun. Shun was holding onto what had just been returned to him. The room was warm, and his palm was so hot that it was almost burnt. The wolf’s golden eyes were shining in the soft light and swaying like the fire in the fireplace. The eyes were the same color as the magic stone in his hand.

“Cr… Craig…?”

The golden eyes widened. Shun had thought the wind had blown, but he was wrong. The glossy hair in front of him was rippling.

The waves grew larger and larger. Shun was unable to move, merely witnessing the phenomenon occurring in front of him.

The silvery gold fur swayed and changed shape into clothes. The frightening fangs disappeared, and the wolf became a human just like Shun. Craig stood where the beautiful wolf had been.

Shun blinked his eyes. However, no matter how many times he blinked, it was still Craig standing there. Craig grabbed his wrist before he could say anything, and his vision turned upside down.

“…you idiot, you’re… so…”

Directly above him, Shun could see the ceiling and Craig’s face. The voice was familiar to his ears. But his usual confidence had faded away, and he sounded urgent.

Shun gasped as the tips of their noses seemed to touch. Craig’s beautiful eyebrows were drawn together as if he was enduring something painful, and his lips were open as he breathed heavily. His amber amber eyes were wet and full of lust. Both of his wrists hurt as they were pressed against the sheets.

The color of reason remained faintly in his eyes that reflected Shun, but it was only a matter of time. A chill crawled up Shun’s spine.

“… Shun.”

His name was called out with a heavy breath. He couldn’t answer. Craig’s frighteningly neat face came closer to him, and he eventually lost focus.

Chapter 16: Everyone Has Their Own Definition of Sadness

The next day, as Shun was walking down the corridor to the East Tower as usual, he was approached by a strange old man.

“Where are you going this early morning?”

The tall man wore a white, pastor’s cassock that hides his feet, and the collar was embroidered with gold butterflies. His neatly trimmed hair was a splendid silver-gray, and there were wrinkles around his deep-set eyes. His spine was set straight as if it was hung from a string from above him, and he had an aura of dignity that could only be called intimidating.

“I woke up early and was free… so I was going to the library. By the way, what about you?

It was a question Shun didn’t want to ask, but he was fully prepared for the answer anyway. He wasn’t used to talking to his elders casually, but judging by his attire, he wasn’t a member of the royal family. So he’ll gloss over that so it doesn’t look strange.1

   1. So I thought only royalty could wear butterfly stuff but ok author-san. I’ve been sweating thinking this was the King the whole time lmao

Shun had never met anyone who matched the words “strict” and “intelligent” so well. He wasn’t a soldier. He didn’t look like a waiter. Shun had a bad feeling about this.

“My apologies, I arrived late. My name is Schweitzer Karkarov. His Majesty2 appointed me as Your Royal Highness’s new governor.”

   2. The text said “his excellency” and excuse me, did you mean the King or some rando Duke (for anyone confused as why I say this applies to dukes when currently “your grace” does, that’s because “excellency” was used for high level government officials, which were usually positions filled by dukes in medieval times, like how marquesses always have border territories, etc.)?? Anyways, His Grace/His Majesty are like time frame 1520+ or prior with fantasy fics it’s just like pick your poison… Thanks so much to everyone who voted! We will be using “His Majesty” from here on.

He briskly kneeled down and bowed his head with his hands over the butterfly embroidery.

As expected!

Shun held his head in his heart. His former governor retired the other day because he wanted to spend the rest of his time with his grandchildren. How could he be expected to spend the rest of his precious life in charge of educating a good-for-nothing? That was also why Shun’s knowledge of self-defense magic had progressed very slowly.

Anyway, Shun felt bad that his career ended on him taking care of a mob character. He hoped his previous governor would continue to live for a long time.

“It is very good to make use of the library. However, why do you have such a large bag with you?”

The bag that contained Shun’s commoner clothing was pointed out. He was perceptive.

“Well, when I use my head, I get hungry, so I put some snacks in it.”

In fact, only about a third of the bag contained candy and cookies from the castle, which Carl had asked him to procure because he wanted to study them. So Shun wasn’t lying, but was it a suitable excuse for a twenty-eight-year-old? His eyes swam, but the ashen gray-blue eyes did not waver in their piercing stare at him. This penetrating gaze is characteristic of the elder generation, who could differentiate between sour and sweet.

“Is that so?”

It was a quiet amnesty, but he never looked away.

“Please remember these words, a prince does not straighten his crown before a Li3.”

   3. You’re not supposed to know what this means! >:O It gets explained next chapter, don’t worry.

“Hm, ah, yes.”

Shun didn’t dare confess that he did not understand what that meant, so he just nodded several times. Schweitzer softened his gaze, smiled, gave him a textbook bow, and took his leave. Shun darted away across the carpet without hesitation. When he turned around a corner and disappeared from sight, he lost his strength.

He was a good, old man.

That was my first impression. Shun couldn’t believe that even the youngest prince would receive such a fierce governor. Maybe it was because of the conflict with the twentieth prince that Shun had reported the other day. Perhaps the aides mentioned that his laissez faire attitude should be revised.

“It looks like I’m going to have less freedom than before.”

Shun was just starting to fit in with everyone. He walked slowly down the corridor to the Eastern Tower.

When he arrived at the usual meeting point, he found the same carriage he had taken yesterday, but there was no one there to pick him up. For a moment, Shun was scared that he had been dismissed because of the other night, but then he realized that the carriage wouldn’t be there. Plus, there was a window on it too.

As he approached the carriage, the door opened itself. Shun still wasn’t used to magic. While he was frozen in surprise, a small piece of paper fluttered out in front of him.

Since you are now an official member of the group, there will be no morning pick-up and return from today. You will be able to arrive at your destination on your own if you get in the carriage and give the signal. If you have any problems, break the magic stone embedded in the side of the carriage. I’ll make sure that I or someone else comes to help you. There’s also the matter of your curse, but don’t worry about it too much and just call me. I’m sorry I forgot to tell you last night. –Craig.

Shun gazed at the parchment for a while, which was easy to read but had a habit of rising to the right. Instead of it bothering him, Craig had apologized to him. The fact that there was a letter there meant that he had arranged it after that night. Shun’s heart ached.

Shun had to see Craig soon and apologize. Although he would apologize, he couldn’t change his ultimate goal. Although he knew it was only for self-satisfaction, he quickly climbed into the carriage, hoping he would see Craig soon.

When it came down to it, Shun was nervous. He took a deep breath and then opened the door to the hideout.

“Good morning. Congratulations on being promoted to a regular member.”

It was Dian, who was relaxing on the sofa, who greeted him with a smile. A little disappointed, he answered with a smile and his honest thanks. He put his bag on his desk, double checking that there was no else there but Dian.

“Craig’s not here.”

“Huh? Oh, yeah…”

“If you only stare at the study, you’ll be found out.”

It appeared that Shun had been asking with his expression “How did you find out??”, and he returned the words with a wry smile.

“Craig has been away for a while.”

Dian continued, looking over the newly acquired handouts. Shun remembered his shadowed face.

“Replenishing magic?”

“It’s something like that. That guy has a strong magical power, but there are certain conditions imposed on him. It’s just a period of time to clear those conditions. I don’t know anything else about it.”

Dian patiently answered each of his questions. He was also a step ahead of Shun, filling in each of the little details he would’ve asked about before he could.

No one knew the exact details of the matter besides Craig and Dian. Everyone always said that they had asked one of them.

It would be advantageous to know all of the details about why the heroine should be paired with him, but he didn’t want to pry too much and step on their toes.

“Oh right. Gin told me to give you this.”

Dian set down a cloth bag on Shun’s desk. It landed so heavily that Shun had an inkling as to what it might be. Dian laughed vigorously at Shun, whose cheek was twitching.

“Rest assured, Craig stopped him from adding the fireball feature. Instead, it’s got something better.”

Dian told him and then returned to the sofa. Although the abacus Shun removed from the bag was heavy enough to dislocate his wrists, but it was beautifully repaired. There was no doubt about that. On the side, there was a glittering magic stone that shone gold that wasn’t there before. It was smaller than the one on his bracelet, but it was obvious who imbued it.

“In an emergency, there is more power in that abacus than any sword.”

Dian smiled at Shun, who was at a loss for words. He hurriedly fixed his expression and sat down at his desk.

As soon as he opened up a ledger, Gin appeared next to him. And then, with an annoying wink, he said, “Let’s go to the casino!”

Shun stared at him calmly for awhile.

“No, thank you.”

“Why! Don’t talk politely!”

“I’m working now, you know. You need to work too.”

It wasn’t like Gin to endure it, even if Shun gave him a cold shoulder. However, if he had such a virtuous personality, he wouldn’t put lead in a calculator. Shun didn’t want to even think about going to the casino in the first place. However, his resistance was futile in front of Gin’s unrelenting pursuit of love.

After listening to Gin talk about how sexy the girl working at the casino was and that she was his fated partner, praising her as both a lark and an angel, Shun finally ended up agreeing with a pained expression.

“After work…”

It was a traumatic experience.

“The carriage will only be out until the evening. If it’s after that, we’ll make sure you get to a safe place.”

Dian must have heard about Shun’s curse. When he said this, Gin gave a light hearted, thumbs up. Shun felt anxious.

Thanks to the other day’s incident, the books were in the black. The only thing he was worried about was the magician, who got away.

“I don’t think they’ll have enough money to hire people with the skill to break Craig’s spell again.”

Dian leaned his head against his hand, and Gin and the others agreed.

* * *

By the time the sun set, Shun was being dragged along a stone-paved road by Gin with a distant look in his eyes. There was a casino at the back of the red-light district, which was lined up with the main street and south of the central market. The atmosphere was rather gloomy for the interior of Second Avenue.

Gin, despite usually being rather flighty, had swordsmanship skills good enough to be recruited by the Royal Knights, plus he also had the bracelet Craig made him. Shun wasn’t too nervous, but he was also careful not to leave Gin’s side.

“Where’s Evan? I don’t see him very often these days.”

“There’s been a lot of annoying customers dropping by the flower shop lately. He’s been going there as a guard.”

Shun had found out a little while ago that Evan’s florist visits and his reason for them was a not-so-secret secret from the other members. Evan was the only one who thought he was hiding it, and everyone else was just warmly watching over the youngest one’s trials in love.

The two had apparently become friends when Evan had found a lost, crying child. Carolina, the florist, who thought he was trying to kidnap the child, had hit him with a broom and dustpan. For some reason, Gin eagerly told me in detail.

However, Shun was the only one who knew the secret that Evan always gave one of the flowers from the bouquets he bought to Carolina, who owned the shop. Shun hadn’t specifically heard it from him, but when added up the change he had from the price and the number of flowers he had, it became obvious.

“I can’t even blame Evan for liking her. Carolina is kind and beautiful; she has a great smile; and her breasts are huge!”

“Gin…”

Looking at Gin’s half-eyed expression while he emphasized his expression, Shun shook his head in a flurry.

“I wouldn’t make a move on any of my fellows’ girlfriends! But if I were to buy flowers, I would definitely go to Carolina’s rather than that old man’s and chat with her… Don’t look at me like that!”

Shun instinctively couldn’t trust him and kept giving him a cold glare. Gin let out a sigh with a rare, mysterious look on his face while shrugging his shoulders.

“I want him to be happy, but this is all…”

His usual frivolity is gone, and his beautiful figure stands out. If he approached a woman with that kind of face, his record of rejection with women would be over. However, Shun was afraid he would get carried away, so he wasn’t going to let him know.

“I don’t know much about the world, but is it difficult for a widow?”

“It’s normal for aristocrats to remarry because of heirship issues, but it’s not very popular among commoners. Many women don’t do it because they don’t want to be seen as light on their asses, because they still have the idea that a chaste woman can’t see past two husbands.”

Although Shun had expected this answer, when it was said aloud he frowned. Gin agreed with Shun, who muttered that that thinking was outdated.

“Carolina probably thinks that the affairs of love having nothing to do with her, and even if Evan confessed to her, it’s likely that she would back down and tell him to find a good girl who hasn’t been married yet. Evan is quite popular, after all.”

It’s heartbreaking… Shun muttered with a tight feeling in his chest. Gin nodded.

“It’s as sad as Fermat’s Last Theorem.”

“What?”

Gin rushed to ask.

“It’s a theorem that was written at the end of the book I studied that couldn’t be proved. It waited three hundred and fifty years to be proved, until Wiles proved it. Since Fermat never saw it proofed, it’s very sad. Isn’t it?”

“I don’t know what you’re saying.”

Before Shun knew it, he had stopped talking to Gin, who was already far away. He had talked so passionately that he was mentally separated from reality.

Shun had sealed these thoughts away in his previous world, but ever since he had come to this world, he was getting somewhat too free with his thoughts. As he was trying to make excuses, Gin returned with a wry smile.

“I like your mysterious thoughts very much; it’s interesting. I can also tell that you’re not snobbish about your high, number processing power and that you genuinely just enjoy it. And Craig likes it too.”

“What?”

Shun couldn’t understand the last sentence and looked up at Gin. However he had already lost interest in Shun and was about to throw a kiss at a pretty woman, so Shun pulled his arm.

“Craig likes you…… Is there something wrong?”

He’s certainly been good to Shun, but it’s probably because he feels responsible for him as a leader and because he appreciates Shun’s work, and that was separate from his personal feelings. When Shun said that, Gin tilted his head inexplicably.

“No, he always acts stiff with me, or often looks like it’s difficult, so I’m not sure if he likes me.”

Gin was at last stunned. What Craig had said to him on the first day remained hidden, but since Gin was close to Craig, it seemed like he could tell him. Despite Shun’s concern, while Gin had been looking down at Shun’s wrist, his mouth formed a wide, arcing smile. He nodded several times, seemingly convinced of something.

“I used to say that my favorite antonym was indifference.”

Shun looked at Gin with a large number of questions, but apparently Gin had no intention of explaining to him. They had arrived at the casino, and so that was where the conversation ended.

Shun had imagined a dim, narrow gambling house filled with tobacco smoke, but it was a very bright, three-story building. It was quite extravagant, considering that all the commoner’s houses were single-story. He was overwhelmed when they passed through the grand, staircase entrance, and when they entered the main hall, there was a space similar to the overseas casinos that Shun knew of.

The interior was about the size of a wedding hall and had gorgeous pillars spaced out to support the high ceiling. The wallpaper and carpet had unified, stylish patterns and finely decorated chandeliers hung everywhere.

Although it wasn’t very crowded, the game tables that were arranged at regular intervals were all almost full with uniformed individuals at them handing out square or hexagonal dice and unfamiliar cards in front of them. There were also people watching the games while drinking. It was very lively.

“All right! This way first!”

Gin dragged Shun, who was feeling relieved that security was good, towards the back.

There was a beautiful woman behind the counter with the words cash exchange on it. She wore an elegant dress that emphasized her chest and had a mole under her right eye that doubled her charm. Gin, who was next to Shun, gave a big smile while his nose seemed to stretch. Ah, it’s her.

Since he had been given a reward for the abacus, Gin turned a lot of money into wooden chips. For now, Shun only used thirty thousand gai4. The woman was friendly with Gin and chatted with him, but as soon as she saw Shun’s small bills, she quickly threw out a few chips after finishing the minimal amount of work for the interaction. Indeed, this was the right response.

   4. gai = yen, since the money system is more similar to yen (in case you don’t remember) So like $30 was spent for my fellow Americans.

Shun was impressed, but while he was thinking this, he was pulled away by Gin to sit at a table playing a game he didn’t understand. He sat at the table lost because he didn’t know any of the rules, lost a few rounds and won once before he was forced to sit at another table, and in no time, he was left with only five hundred gai.

“Do you want to buy Evan some candy on the way home?”

While they were sitting in a café where they were allowed to eat and drink, Gin made fun of the amount of money that he had left that could only be used to buy cheap sweets. Shun thought Gin was carrying a good amount of money, but apparently he wasn’t done “yet” as he was breathing in his hands and said he would double it in the next round. Shun could see why people got addicted to gambling. However, he didn’t think Gin was going to go bankrupt as he was making a lot of money.

“I can do five figures in my head because I’ve given up my competitive energy and muscle strength.”

With a frustrated rebuttal, Shun tucked the chip into his pocket to buy Evan a souvenir, as Gin had said. He took a sip of something similar to a cold cocktail and then turned the subject back to Evan and Carolina, who had been on his mind.

“If Evan manages to convince Carolina, there isn’t a ban on dating or marrying a widow, is there?”

“Generally speaking, no. I guess he’s thinking about Carolina by keeping it a secret from us, but the guy himself doesn’t care about what others would say. But she’s not straightforward.”

When Shun tilted his head, Gin looked around and lowered his voice.

“It’s not just that. The third son of a Marquis, Dougray, from First Avenue has set his eyes on her. He has a bad reputation, and it’s rumored that the harassment is also his work. I’ve been bringing wholesalers into Carolina’s shop to raise the price of the flowers, but it seems that the shop’s business is getting worse thanks to them.”

“That’s…”

Gin nodded to Shun, who raised his eyebrows.

“Carolina won’t give in, so he’s trying to force her to marry him in order to save the shop.”

“What a terrible thing!”

Shun couldn’t help but shout out loud. The alcohol seemed to be making him feel hotter than usual. A few people nearby glanced at him, so he closed his mouth in a hurry. However, it didn’t feel right.

“He comes here a lot. Oh, look.”

Looking back behind Shun, Gin pointed at a fat man in his late forties that was dressed like an aristocrat and was seated at the middle of the table. His hair and beard were black and shiny with grease, and his large eyes glanced about cunningly, taking advantage of his distracting, big belly. He occasionally smiles at the pale dealer who sniffs and puts away his dice, but is met with a wry smile, not that he was getting close. He was a poor swindler.

“That’s just how it is, isn’t it?”

“Isn’t he too much for a mob character?”

Shun was a prince in the game, but he didn’t have any special characteristics. However, he didn’t want to be a swindler. While watching the table where a new game was starting, Shun felt a bit incongruous.

Chapter 15: The Case in Which His Secret Weapon Really Was a Weapon

The thief’s eyes turned to the magician for help. However, the magician was no longer there. The magic circle had also disappeared. The faces of the men, who no longer had any means of escape, turned pale.

From then, it didn’t take long. The intruders, still hanging on to their stolen goods, ran at Craig and the others, but before they could show off their swordplay, they fell to the ground. The difference in power was obvious, and it was like the end of a period drama where the bad guys were completely crushed.

Craig, who had finished tying up their leader, came to Shun. Shun hurriedly closed his mouth, which had been humming a theme to a violent general. Although everything hadn’t been completely settled yet, Craig probably decided that he no longer needed to be there.

“Are you okay? I didn’t know that protection would be broken.”

Craig helped Shun up and cut his bindings with a sword. He had a bitter expression on his face.

“It was a mistake to have a discussion first. That’s how they found out where the base was.”

As soon as he arrived at their opponent’s hideout, he had felt uncomfortable with their stalling tactics and hurried back only to find out that the spell had been broken.

“Oh, it’s all right. It’s nothing.”

As Shun spoke, he unconsciously rubbed his arm, which had been burned by the rope. Craig frowned even more, placing his hands over Shun’s arms. He looked at Craig in surprise.

“It’s faster than going to the doctor.”

His eyes were met with a frowning face. Craig immediately turned away and said those quick words.

His hands began to glow faintly red, and Shun’s arms gradually warmed up. In a few seconds, the light was gone and so were his wounds.

“Oh, thank you. So, you can heal…”

Shun marveled at his completely restored arms. Of all the magic types, healing was very advanced, and those who could use it were considered extremely valuable. Royalty and aristocrats were known for surrounding themselves in high-level exclusive healers.

The heroine of the game was allowed to live in the royal castle because of her talent in healing that had awakened when she came to this world. It was a classic type of story of supporting and healing the capture targets in battle. However, with Craig, this trick probably wouldn’t work.

He was a man who had no intention to be captured.

“If it still hurts, go to a doctor. I know you can get a good one,” Craig said, tilting his head at Shun’s pitiful gaze.

All the intruders were already tied up. While Gin complained to Zaz about his sloppy handling of the accounting books, Evan and Diane compared their faces with their wanted papers. Carl was giving Sui, who had already turned back up, a souvenir.

“Well, there was one person lying beside you. How did you do that?”

Shun timidly picked up the abacus that had fallen on the floor and offered it to him.

“What’s this?”

Craig picked it up, and the wood carved into finely curved rhombus made a noise.

“Abacus.”

Shun answered with a little pride to Craig, who parroted back, “Abacus?”

“It’s used for calculations in the country where I’m from. I’ve been using one since I was little, and I think I owe my mental arithmetic skills to it.”

He continued on to when he cut the rope around his wrists with his pen and how he managed to knock the intruder out by throwing the abacus at him.

“I had been doing it only in my head or with my hands, but I was tired of it. I’m glad Gin made it for me.”

Craig’s eyebrows had furrowed sullenly along the way, but Shun continued to talk excitedly without realizing. Come to think of it, Shun wondered what that flash had been when he threw the abacus.

“When I heard about the purpose from Shun, I recalled a tree that was known for being unbreakable and non-stretchable, so I went to a wholesaler that I knew to purchase some.”

Gin, who was next to Shun, said this with a proud expression. Even if you subtract the days when Shun had the rare experience of praise fatigue, it really helped that Gin was a truly helpful character, or so Shun had thought.

“Now I’m glad that I had planted some lead and magic in it, just in case.”

Gin said something outrageous. Lead? As in the metal, lead? And magic? Shun checked the outer frame of the black abacus once again.

“Gin, did you remodel the abacus on your own? With magic??”

“It multiplies the force of your throw by ten times!”

Shun’s eyes almost popped out of his head as Gin gave a thumbs up with a bright expression. No matter how weak Shun was, if a lump of lead thrown with all his might hits someone in the face, moreover if magic was involved, then any man would fall.

“I thought it sounded pretty good…”

Although Shun was convinced, he also had a headache. He knew it was going to give him tendonitis. However, he had assumed that they may have been only able to get heavy materials, and so he had used it silently while afraid of complaining about the weight to Gin, who had made it.

“Craig told me before that he wanted to give Shun something for self-defense, so I thought this would be perfect.”

When I looked at Craig in surprise, he looked as if he had been taken aback.

“I did say that, but I didn’t expect you to put it into a calculator.”

Craig probably would have assumed that Gin would give him something normal, such as a dagger. He had an indescribable expression.

“It’s good that it was able to knock him out. Thanks to Shun’s resistance, they failed to escape and thus, we were able to get a large bounty.”

Gin was so frighteningly helpful that Shun was at a loss for words. Next to him, Craig let out a sigh of resignation.

“You’ve certainly done a good job. Please add on to today’s share, for both Gin and yours.”

Craig told him, and Shun nodded. Gin was so happy that he was dancing a little.

“Yes, it helped. Thank you.”

“Of course! It was a piece of cake for an artisan such as myself.”

“You really like the word artisan a lot…”

Shun almost laughed as he was caught up in the good mood as always. However, he felt like he had to say something before he forgot about it.

“But explain it to Shun properly. Shun and others could have been injured while using it.”

That was what Craig said, and Shun agreed. Gin grudgingly admitted his fault, but not without saying that it would be no fun to teach him first. However, Gin, who was carried away by his achievements, looked even more proudly at Shun.

“Now I’ll make you one where all the beads catch fire and jump out at the opponent.”

“No! Please refrain! I don’t need that!”

Shun was not prepared to use such a dangerous thing every day. It would be a disaster if someone dropped it on their feet and a ball of fire flew out.

“I think it will be fun. Come to think of it, let’s go to the casino to thank the abacus. It’s helpful for you to learn about society, and it’s two birds with one stone.”

There’s a cute girl in the casino, he added on as a soft whisper. Shun shook his head as hard as he could. In the hopes of getting rich, he bought ten lottery tickets at the end of the year, but he wasn’t suited for serious gambling. However, Gin was in a good mood and seemed to be looking forward to something, and thus, didn’t listen to his dissent. Evan refuses as well, but he is determined to see the girl that day.

“I’ll go to Dian and all those who seem to have a good chance of winning,”

“Let’s start card training from tomorrow!”

“Listen!”

Laughing at Shun’s desperate resistance, Gin returned to his friends who were preparing to take the intruders to the Security Bureau.

“You’ve grown quite close.”

Shun looked up at his displeased voice. Craig quickly adjusted his expression.

“I’m sorry. Forget about it.”

He looked away awkwardly. He was like a scolded child, even though he was usually so unapproachable, even when they got a huge reward like earlier. Craig looked up toward the sky, exhaled once, and turned to Shun again.

“Go home now. I’ll take you.”

When I said goodbye to everyone, there was a carriage as usual. What was unusual, however, was that there was a window on it.

“This…”

“It was a unanimous decision.”

Craig shrugged his shoulders and said bluntly, “Good for you.”

Shun was not afraid of the embarrassed atmosphere and returned the words with a big smile.

He opened the window and took in the scenery he had never gotten to see before. It was like the suburbs, different from the areas inside and outside of the castle. He could see a market that was smaller than the central market. No one would usually leave the window of a carriage open during the winter weather, but it was pleasant to see Shun’s bright cheeks.

“You look like a child.”

“I’m enjoying a feeling of freedom. And I’m older than you are.”

He was like a child looking excitedly out the window with their knees resting on their seat and their hands on the window frame to see a train. However, Craig, who sat directly opposite to him, gave him a teasing look, so Shun told him this in response, proud of his age.

“But I’m glad to hear that. It’s nice to be thought of as younger.”

He sat back on the cushions and said thanks.

“I’m serious. I don’t know if you’re a noble or the son of some great merchant, but you’re not tall and your attitude is the same with everyone. Gin, of course, but also Evan and Dian have been bothering me to get you to join as soon as possible.”

Craig was chuckling, although he made himself sound troubled. Shun’s face reddened at the unusual compliment, and he shrinks a bit. Craig’s smile deepened when he saw this.

Maybe he could hear the answer to it now.

There was an unusually mild and warm air between Craig and Shun. Why did Craig tell him to stay away from him? What does he mean that it wasn’t Shun’s fault? Shun swallowed his saliva with a gulp.

“C– Ah!”

Suddenly, the carriage stopped, and Shun, who was eager, fell forward.

“…are you all right?”

His nose hurt even though he didn’t hit it hard. As he was thinking about that, a low voice came from above his head. In front of him was a chest plate that could be seen through the thickness of his clothes. I had a sense of déjà vu.

It seemed that Craig had caught me.

“Oh, sorry!”

“You seem to be fine.”

When Shun hurried back to his seat, he was met with a dumbfounded expression. Shun laughed and distracted him from it. Although he isn’t kabedoned, in the Dawn Fog, someone is always catching him if he even staggers. He often saw the heroine’s fate as the surrogate.

“It’s good if you’re not injured. I don’t want you to retire as soon as you join.”

“Yes, that’s right. By the way, have we arrived yet? It’s a different place from usual.”

Shun wanted to change the subject, so he had looked outside, but he didn’t see the gate to First Avenue. He was told to wait a minute, and Craig disappeared outside.

Judging from what he could see, it looked like it was the central market on Second Avenue. Seeing as it didn’t smell good, Shun assumed he went to buy tools, weapons, or other necessary supplies for the Dawn Fog while he was dropping him off.

He came back after a bit of time. After that, the carriage continued on, and Shun was dropped off at the usual place.

For some reason, Craig, who was supposed to separate with him there, also stepped out and turned to Shun. He silently took out a small, leather bag from his pocket and placed it in Shun’s hand.

“Take this. I should have given it to you earlier.”

Shun opened the black pouch without understanding the remorseful tone. Inside was a bracelet made from a thick, leather string. The silver pendant on the high-quality, black leather strap was rectangular and reminded Shun of dog tags from his original world.

Slightly above the center of the tag was a large, golden magic stone.

When he looked up, Craig looked increasingly distressed with wrinkles between his eyebrows. Shun finally understood. Perhaps because he was trying to hide his feelings, he looked sullen.

“I put some of my magic power into the stone. If you wear it, it should prevent people with bad intentions from approaching you from under the influence of your curse, like today.”

“You came all this way to make it? For me?”

He procured and concentrated his magic into the stone. Then it was processed into a bracelet. It must have taken a lot of time and effort to order from the store. He did that with his busy schedule.

Shun stared at the bracelet in his hand again. He felt like his palm was getting warmer because he knew Craig’s magic was in it.

“I don’t want you to be late because of a man chasing after you.”

It was a straightforward answer, but it turned out to be embarrassing. Shun was so happy with Craig’s kindness that he immediately put the bracelet on his left arm.

The cold metal caressed his wrist. However, he soon got used to it and felt like he had been wearing it for a long time.

Only people with certain types of magical power could imbue a magic stone with their magic. Moreover, it’s extremely physically demanding. Was that the reason why he looked worse than the last time?

While stroking the gold stone, Shun looked at Craig. There was a face there that was more grumpy than before.

“The stone turns the same color as the person’s eyes. Bear with it.”

“I don’t need to bear with it. I’m glad it’s the same color as Craig. Thank you.”

After saying so much from the bottom of his heart, Shun stopped. Ah? He had just said something rather strange. Plus, it was scary that there was no response from Craig.

“Oh, but this is the kind of thing the heroine should get. I’m sorry for being a bit of a nuisance.”

The words slipped out of my mouth in a hurry.

“The heroine… the person from another world that you said would be happy if they’re stuck to me?”

“Yes, that heroine…”

Shun couldn’t help but swallow his words. It wasn’t that embarrassing. Obvious discomfort appeared in his golden eyes.

Shun didn’t know if something he had said had offended Craig. However, he made every excuse he could think of.

“I’m sorry. I know Craig has his preferences, and it’s annoying that you’d have to be with a woman you don’t know well to make me happy.”

Shun apologized once again. While he was looking down, a sigh leaked out from above him.

“That’s what happens when your life is on the line. ……see you later.”

Before Shun had the chance to look up, Craig had already gotten into the carriage and left.

Craig did something laborious to imbue the bracelet with magic. He was always worried about Shun, but what about him? It made Shun realize how self-centered he was being.

“Fool…”

Shun clutched the bracelet. The golden, magic stone was warm all the same. On the other hand, it made the coldness of his hands all the more apparent.

TL Note: Oh, Shun… My baby, my foolish young man… Craig and I still love you. I’m crying and laughing at him rn.

There probably won’t be a Friday update again. I’ve got an essay due then as well as a few other assignments that are giving me some trouble, so I likely won’t be able to fit in that chapter on top everything else. Sorry! So I lied. It’s all scheduled out until Friday. The next button won’t work until Wednesday, sorry!

Chapter 14: Don’t do Anything Bad

A wolf descended on the dead world ruled by ice and snow. With his first roar, he melted the snow, and with his second, he called the sun.

As his voice echoed three or four times, the earth was filled with plants and flowers, and the animals that ate them flourished. Fish swam in the sea, and they learned how to carry seeds. The seventh roar gave birth to the King of Men, and with this as his last roar, he returned to his land in heaven.

But the King of Men, who had been entrusted with the country by the wolf, soon began to oppress people with his arrogance.

One night, a bad butterfly stopped at the tip of his nose and suggested that the King should take the wolf’s power as his own as well. So the King deceived the innocent and untrained citizens into making a huge ladder that could reach the sky.

When the ladder reached heaven, the wolf was very ashamed of the King’s stupidity, releasing a sorrowful howl. All of the holy wolves in the country responded, and their sad roars shook the earth and enraged the sea.

The devastated sea destroyed the ladder, and on a moonlit night when the moon was full, a creature that was neither man nor wolf was born from the dust. The werewolf attacked ships and villages at night and ate livestock and people alike.

The wolf commanded the King.

“That is an abominable beast, the product of your sins. Let your son slay the werewolf, or your son will become it. And then, he will have nothing but a wilderness overrun with demons, where no vegetation can grow.”

The prince was still young. The false king, who was a fool, became furious and ordered his battle-hardened soldiers to subdue the werewolf. However, the werewolf was in a labyrinthine cave, where no one could reach it, and none of the soldiers came back.

The prince, who had soon become a bright, young man, said to his father:

“Please prepare the sacred bow and arrow, a ball of thread and incense. Then I will return triumphantly with a thousand miles of fertile land in my hands.”

On the night of the new moon, when the werewolf’s strength had weakened, the prince entered the cave with his golden bow and arrows in hand. He burned the incense, and when the werewolf had lost all sense of smell, he loosed an arrow.1

   1. It says that he “shot” the arrow, but since it’s like a fairytale, I figured the medieval terms for it would be better.

The werewolf collapsed, and the prince followed the ball of string he had laid out to the entrance and returned to the royal palace. The prince became the True King, and the human’s country flourished once more.

The book ended with an illustration of a young man with intelligent eyes, who Shun assumed was the prince, kneeling before a noble wolf and crowned.

The back cover was also beautifully detailed. Decorations based on plants and trees were drawn, and in the middle, an emblem that looked like the wolf’s face was drawn in gold foil.

“Tempted by the bad butterfly… It’s certainly picking a fight with the Butterfly Country.”

This was probably the creation myth of the Wolf Country. If someone had been taught about the relationship of these two countries from these kinds of fairytales, it would be a bit worrying for the relationship between the two countries. Maybe it was like England and France2 from Shun’s original world?

   2. Honestly any England-adjacent country could go here lmao though Ireland or Scotland might’ve been a better fit since you can see anti-England things from them even now… but I guess Shun’s referring to the long-standing history of wars between the two(?) instead of just the enmity.

However, it was beautifully illustrated. Shun didn’t know much about art, but he remembered being shown an art collection by a colleague, and these illustrations reminded him of Mucha3.

   3. I believe it’s referring to Alphonse Mucha here, a Czech painter and illustrator. I’ll throw something of his down at the bottom. His art is very detailed and pretty, perfect for old, illustrated fairytales if you’re familiar with those.

The wolves were drawn with graceful curves and were noble enough to be Genesis gods. Even the ugly werewolf could be considered beautiful because of its awe-inspiring appearance.

Shun slowly turned the pages and stopped on the page where the prince went to subdue the werewolf. His eyes were particularly heroic.

Shun felt like he looked like Craig.

He stopped his hand from stroking the soft hair. What on Earth are you doing? Shun turned red at his own thoughts.

“No, nothing!”

It was true that Craig was by far the coolest guy he’d ever met and he was neat and as beautiful as the Fibonacci sequence.

However, he couldn’t accept this thought. Shun cried out in the living room, hurriedly standing up to put the book back onto the shelf.

The next moment, a page was turned by the wind blowing in from somewhere. The fire went out, and the warm room grew cold.

Shun was certain that all the windows were closed. His head turned toward the door as if possessed.

A dazzling magic circle appeared on the floor, and green streaks of light billowed up toward the ceiling.

“What?”

A man emerged from the circle. He wore a loose black robe like a priest, and his hood covered his eyes. A necklace with a red jewel glowed from where it laid against his chest.

A magician.

Shun turned to run away, pushed by the fright he felt in his spine. But it was too late.

The magician raised his thin, white arm.

Immediately it felt like Shun’s whole body had been electrocuted, and he lost all his strength, falling into a slump.

One by one, more men appeared from inside the magician’s circle in Shun’s shaky vision. The eight men grinned at each other once they were all inside.

Amongst the exuberant men, only one magician quietly erased the magic circle that they had used to invade.

Shun’s hands were tied behind his back and tied to his chair. When Shun tried to think of something that was out of place to relieve his fear like he often saw in foreign, detective dramas, he felt something slip out of his body, and his vision became clear.

The magician had raised his hand toward Shun, albeit from far away. He must have figured out something.

“Is this the right place, Zaz?”

The large man, who gave off the coldest impression, asked the man next to him.

“Yeah, definitely.”

After his thin, green eyes had surveyed the room from under his cropped, black hair, Zaz laughed spitefully. Shun recognized the name.

“You… You’re the one who embezzled the money, aren’t you?”

Shun didn’t know where he gotten his courage, but he couldn’t help but ask this. Craig and everyone else were probably still on their way to their hideout to thank him for this.

“You don’t look familiar. You must be new. Oh, you’re the new bookkeeper.”

Zaz showed his yellow teeth as he assessed Shun’s childish face and slim body, which were clearly unfit for fighting.

“You know what? That Craig guy has a lot of money. All while you’re hustling away for a shoe string salary that ends up in the gambling bin. He’ll make you start over just because you miscalculated a few things. And then, to top it all off, they fire me for causing a ruckus. Now they want their money back. You’re all so greedy.”

Pep4 and Zaz spat on the floor that had been recently cleaned by Carl and Dian.

   4. He was suddenly named here, so I’m assuming it’s the huge, cold guy beside Zaz.

The other men were looking around for something, stamping about in dirty shoes, throwing books from their shelves and dishes from the cupboards, and placing anything expensive-looking in hemp bags.

“That’s why you’re here, to steal money for revenge? You’re the only one whose been cast out for being unable to do their job. You’re the one who’s being greedy.”

Shun didn’t think Craig was stingy. He was getting a decent salary, and the money he saved was for capital investment and preparation for a rainy day. Moreover, it was an iron rule of the guild that the accounting had to be accurate.

Shun closed his mouth quickly after saying everything. Zaz’s face turned red and trembled like a boiling octopus5.

   5. Octopus sometimes moves (after it’s already long dead) when cooked and stuff. I put a gif at the bottom if you’re curious.

If the protective barrier surrounding the house was broken, the caster, Craig, would know about it. It was a good idea for him to try to buy time for them to return and also to irritate them, but his words, when Shun couldn’t even move at all, could also be considered stupid.

“A kid like you has got a lot of nerve…!”

“Stop. We don’t have time for that.”

The quiet voice of the man beside him was what stopped Zaz, who had drawn the sword from his waist and almost jumped at Shun.

“The caster of the protection spell will soon know that it was broken.”

The man continued, staring straight at Shun with cold, light blue eyes. His words made it clear that he had seen through Shun’s thoughts. The man, who seemed to be their leader, said nothing more and seemed to have lost interest in both Shun and Zaz, now simply observing the room.

“Looks like the information that they would be out was good. The magician Zaz brought is really good.”

The cold man6 disappeared into the back with the magician. They left two people to keep an eye on Shun, while Zaz and the others followed the other two further in.

   6. I removed a bit here, since it was already said in the earlier paragraph.

From what Shun could see, it appeared that their leader was the only strong one while the rest were just a bunch of thugs gathered from around the area. The Dawn Fog, on the other hand, was so skilled that it was even talked about in the royal palace. Since Shun had seen these men’s appearance, physique and aura that had been acquired through training and discipline, he could tell that these men didn’t even compare.

However, even though Shun knew this, he was still no match for the thugs. The only thing he could do was escape.

When he looked over at the desk pitifully, he saw the pen he had been using. The nib was sharp and strong. He figured he might be able to use it for what he often saw in movies.

While the men were looking for something with gold on it, Shun struggled to grasp the pen on the desk with his hand and angled it to cut the rope binding his arms. There was an unreliable, crisp sound, but he didn’t know if it was working or not. After three or four minutes of this, Shun felt like his hands were about to cramp.

Then, from the back of the second floor, there was an explosion that shook the whole house. Perhaps the magic guarding the vault had been broken. If they had brought in enough people to nullify it, he was probably aiming for the vault from the beginning.

The men gathered in the living room with heavy, hemp bags. The magician was not with them. Shun turned his body as much as he could to keep his bound hands out of sight.

Even though it’s not a profession they can proudly say they have, it’s a fortune they had amassed with their lives. My legs trembled with anger and my own pettiness at the thought of it all disappearing into these guys’ drinking money.

“Hey, can’t we take this guy too?”

One of the men pointed insolently at Shun. One look at the man was all it took to make Shun’s blood run cold. He had serpentine eyes, a crushed nose, and jagged teeth. He looked plain and villainous.

Again, his heroine attributes had activated! Shun wished that it would give up its job every once in awhile.

“Hey, hey. Is that all you have in mind?”

The men, who weren’t satisfied with the amount of gold coins, were still looking around and were mocked. They weren’t interested in the books that would sell for a reasonable amount of money, so it was obvious they weren’t educated.

“I’m wasn’t aware of it, but it seems to be so. This one is quite intriguing.”

“Oh, that’s for sure.”

The other man, who was closest to him, looked over Shun’s face and body like he was licking it. Shun’s whole body shuddered. Someone spoke in a teasing voice, asking if Shun had fascinated them, and even though it wasn’t funny, the men all laughed aloud.

It was the curse of the acting heroine, and Shun felt dizzy. He was really sympathizing with the heroine, who would suffer this kind of damage with a woman’s thin arms.

Now, Shun was very distressed. What should he do? He felt like this was the sort of situation that couldn’t be recovered from even if he was rescued by a capture target later.

To make matters worse, they still didn’t fully trust Shun. If the safe was ransacked and Shun was missing, he might be suspected as an accomplice. Finally, after he had gotten along with everyone else enough to be left behind by himself…

“Well, it’s about time we left.”

The leader’s quiet voice signaled. The men headed for the exit, packing their pockets with the leftover gold coins that hadn’t been bagged. Just inside the door, a large, magic circle that had a different pattern shone with blue light, where the magician, who had already returned before Shun even realized, awaited them. At any rate, it looked like they were going to escape through there.

Craig and the rest of them weren’t going to be able to make it in time.

“Well, then you too…”

The man’s scarred hand stretched out towards Shun. It would be thousands of times better to fall as the foundation of love between the heroine and a prince than to be caught by them.

As Shun thought this, his body was already moving before he even realized. He stood up with the chair and grabbed what was beside him with his bound hands, and the rope broke. The friction made his arms hurt. He drew back and threw the thing he grabbed with all his might.

“Hah!”

Shun threw it at once, and the abacus hit the man in the face. There was a dull sound of bones crashing against each other, followed by a sharp, flash of light.

Huh, a flash?

The man fell slowly, and at the same time, the abacus also hit the floor. However, Shun had lost his balance and turned over the chair. The men, who were about to do nothing, stopped and turned towards me all at once.

The men standing in the magic circle seemed completely blown away, and the magician looked at him with wide eyes. However, the leader’s response was quick.

“He’s using suspicious tricks! Quick, get out of here!”

The magician, who heard the order, began to chant with his index finger and middle finger against his mouth, appearing to have recovered from his initial shock.

The light of the magic circle was getting brighter. Were they going to run away just like this? Tears of frustration welled up in Shun’s eyes.

But then the spell was broken. The magician jumped back. There was an arrow in the shoulder of the man beside him.

Craig, with his sword drawn, stood in front of the crumpling man. Next to him was Evan, who was also armed with a sword, and Carl, who was already nocking his next arrow.

Gin’s voice and busy footsteps were fast approaching.

“You did it in a flashy way.”

Craig laughed when he saw the scattered books, damaged furniture, and Shun lying on the floor while tied to a chair. He looked very amused while glaring at the men who were frozen in place.

Chapter 13: Once a Month……?

Even though he belonged to a bounty hunter group, Shun doesn’t get dragged into the rough stuff. Their fighting power was sufficient without him. So Shun faced numbers every day, contributed to spoiling Sui, and served as a taste tester of Carl’s new dishes.

It was a very peaceful day.

Shun actually hadn’t seen Craig for about a week since he had spoken to him outside of the carriage. Apparently, he regularly takes several consecutive days off. At first, Shun had thought that he had a chronic disease, but according to Dian, the way he replenished his magical powers was special.

It seemed that the different atmosphere around Craig that Shun had felt was due to the increase and decrease of his magical powers.

Shun wondered if “replenishing magic” was actually related to women for a moment, considering how Gin was acting, thrusting his elbow into Evan, who was holding some ice cream.

The hand that was moving his pen stopped when he recalled the conversation.

Woman… Was it the heroine? No, Shun shook his head. The constant threat of kabedons had not subsided. Then another woman?

Shun wondered what kind of woman Craig would choose. She had to have been a beautiful woman that Shun hadn’t seen before.

“…I wouldn’t say it’s a digital calculator, but I’d like to have an auxiliary one to use on the tabletop.”

If Craig had a lover, then it would probably take a while for him to form a bond with the heroine, so Shun forced his thoughts back to the work at hand and left it alone.

While rubbing away the stiffness in his shoulders, he saw a mass of metal that had become an ornament next to him. There were some devices that could help with calculation. It was right to put that in past tense.

They were machines that were as large as household printers, and the gears on the surface of it were arranged in an orderly fashion. They were no longer used because no one knew how to use it, and then one or two parts that were used by Gin were taken to repair weapons. Now it was mostly just ignored.

Shun had thought about getting a new calculator, but the same type that he had seen on the market was rather expensive. It wasn’t a very good purchase, considering how cost effective it would be when he took his time to use it and the fact that its multiplication and division wasn’t accurate into account. As a bookkeeper, that was a bit of a problem.

They would have to figure out another way. Not only would it help with Shun’s stiff shoulders, but also Craig’s feelings towards him would improve from him showing off his usefulness. With that, mediating between Craig and the heroine would become easier.

“What’s wrong? Are you getting tired of all the numbers?”

“I’m not tired of it. Why do you all ask the same question?” Gin, who had arrived earlier from his work, teased Shun while looking at the account book. So Shun responded with a bored expression. He always replied that he wasn’t tired of it, but he was getting a little bored of it like today’s Gin.

“Well, nevermind that. I want you to make something.”

If Shun asked for this at the royal palace, he would be met with suspicion, and it would be troublesome. He also couldn’t go to the market alone, and since Shun already looked naïve in the first place, he felt like he would be charged an exorbitant price for this. In which case, there was no one else for him to hire other than Gin, who was entrusted with the dexterous work of weapon crafting and repair.

“I don’t like it because it looks troublesome.” As soon as Gin saw Shun’s drawing of the completed project, he declared this. Why with such a handsome face?

“Please! There’s no one but Gin. That’s right! I’ll thank you and buy you a meal!”

“You can make it.” Evan, who had entered the living room, was clutching a large amount of homemade cookies and holding one heart-shaped one in his mouth.

“I have to make dozens of cookies of the same shape, you know.”

Gin sulkily held up the fluttering drawing of the finished product in his hand for Evan to see. Evan took a disinterested glance at it, and then tossed a star-shaped cookie into his mouth. He was growing up.

“It’s partly your fault that it’s so hard to calculate that Shun needs it.”

“Ugh.”

Evan’s righteous theory left Gin at a loss for words. It seemed he still felt guilty about the books. However, Gin was now grumbling and muttering at the picture.

Evan and Shun’s eyes met from over Gin. Evan pointed at Gin and patted the back of his other hand with his hand. Huh? Shun scrutinized him and looked closely at him, and this time he knelt down and fluttered his palm as if he was praising someone. Oh, I see.

“You are the only one I can ask. I don’t know anyone who has the skill to make this better than you.”

“What? Really?”

Gin was shaken by Shun’s exaggerated compliments. Looking back, Evan was now eating a bear-shaped cookie with an unconcerned look, but his eyes were shining.

“You’re just as I expected you to be. You already know the work process and the time it would take, just by looking at my poorly done drawing. You’re a master, master! Gin, no, master artisan!”

“Well, if that’s the case.”

After these words, Gin finally clapped his heart as if to say, “leave it to me”. Evan raised his thumb as Gin wrote a note next to Shun’s request. Shun responded with the same gesture.

Gin was easy to convince when flattered. Shun was going to remember that.

At any rate, Shun was very grateful that he was making it for him. After that he visited Gin’s worship frequently, and as he progressed, Shun made sure to praise him.

“You’ve already gotten this much done? You’re the best craftsman in town! In even the royal capital!”

“This smooth form! It’s like a fine piece of art. It’s like a box full of jewels!”

It was like a TV gourmet commentator had possessed him.

“…what on earth are they doing?”

After a week or so, Craig had returned, and Shun praised Gin like this under Craig and Dian’s curious eyes and Evan’s amused and helpless expression.

***

Two more weeks passed.

In the afternoon when the work that had become dramatically easier had ended, Craig and Dian, who had been absent all the morning, entered the living room. All of the guild members were called in today. The atmosphere around the two made everyone tense.

Craig looked around at them and said, “I know where he is.”

The “he”, he was referring to, was Zaz. Roy and the other group members had been looking for him ever since the fraud was discovered. Even Gin’s usual, dandy atmosphere disappeared, and Shun, who was standing a little further away from everyone else, stood up a little straighter. It was like a military ceremony in a movie.

“He’s in another guild now.”

There were countless people who came from rural towns supported only by their own dreams and legs. They had all worked together to make another guild like the Dawn Fog. Zaz’s new work place seemed to be quite large.

Additionally, this guild seemed to be a cause for concern for the security forces, who had issued a bounty of fifty thousand for them. Until now, they hadn’t bothered with the other guild because it wasn’t very cost-effective, but when one of them had gone to talk to the guild about Zaz, they had been turned away and insulted. Though the Dawn Fog was usually — a self-proclaimed — mild mannered guild, they could not be silent.

“I’ll have you pay me back exactly what you owe me.”

Craig’s low declaration was followed by the echo of the men’s brave, war cries. Additionally, it made the earth feel like it was rumbling, and an electric current ran through Shun’s body. Now, Shun realized that they were warriors too, even as they chatted and ate cookies with him. At the same time, he felt a bit sorrowful about his own weakness and inability to help them.

Shun ran up to Craig, who was preparing his horse outside of the castle for the long trip without a bow and arrows or shield.

“Sorry for disturbing you before you leave, but are you all right?”

Once a month, Craig needed to replenish his magical powers. It was about the time for him to take that vacation again. There was a shadow on his face even; just as there was a month ago.

Craig looked back at Shun in surprise. However, he laughed, showing his canine teeth as he did, which was rare for him, perhaps in an attempt to reassure Shun, who seemed overly worried.

“I’m just a little tired. I’ll take a rest after it’s all settled.”

No one else had noticed Craig’s condition except perhaps Dian. It was true that his brisk movements were the same as usual, and there was no way he could be the head of the Dawn Fog unless he could tell whether he would be a burden to himself and the others.

“Be careful.”

“Ok.”

He left Craig, who jumped easily onto his horse.

“I’ll bring you more bounties than you can count.”

“The books will soon be full, and Shun will be very busy.”

With Evan and Gin taking the lead, they all left while saying similar happy and foreboding lines.

The living room felt very spacious. Come to think of it, it was the first time Shun was left to look after the castle alone.

He sat at his desk in a somewhat unsettled mood. He took out his secret weapon that Gin had made — the abacus — from the drawer. While waiting for them to bring back their countless winnings, Shun tried to work through the pile of ledgers from last year with a particularly heavy one in hand.

“Is this two…? No, it’s sixty-seven, so that’s a five.”

It seemed that the person in charge at the time was at quite an old age. Shun had also heard that he was a former merchant, but his handwriting is much more beautiful than the one he had been working on before. The reason he was rewriting these was because it was written so masterfully that no one could decipher it.

As Shun continued to work silently, he suddenly felt hungry. When he looked around, the sun was shining through the empty living room. He suddenly recalled that Carl had baked him a pie. He took a plate out of the kitchen cupboard and took a breather in the dining room while preparing some kalia1. Its white steam gives off a fragrant scent.

   1. In case you don’t remember, this is the drink that’s similar to coffee.

The apple pie had a crispy crust and was juicy and sweet inside, and it soothed his anxiety. Craig’s condition was worrisome, but the Dawn Fog that was full of fierce men surely wouldn’t be injured much.

“Now that my brain has been nourished, let’s give it another go.”

Shun suddenly felt motivated when he stretched out his arms in front of himself. He was about to return to his seat with the cup after washing the emptied plate, when he suddenly noticed a book lying in the middle of the sofa.

It was Craig who read there. What kind of book was he reading?

“It’s not curiosity. It’s just tidying up.”

The title of the book that he had picked up with a lame excuse was was debossed into the brown, leather cover. It was titled, “Strategic Formation”, something Shun would usually never be seen with.

Shun looked over the introduction and had no idea what to say. He gently closed the book. It would be impossible for Shun to bond with Craig over this topic. If only he had read something that was about the beauty of the Fibonacci sequence, then they could have talked about it.

I put the book back in the gaping hole in the shelves, which were lined up in an orderly fashion, and it fit neatly into place. I looked at the army of books, remembering something my ex-supervisor had told me about people who were tidy being good at their jobs. I happed to find something that stuck out at the end.

Amongst all of the uniform books, there was a single, thin book that had a protruding back cover, perhaps because of its size. Craig had said that he could read the books as he wished, so Shun picked it up.

When Shun flipped it over to see the cover, he saw an illustration of a wolf with magnificent, silver hair roaring at the sky. A delicate touch had been used to paint the cover, and the ink made each strand of his hair shine. Surprisingly, a wolf in full-color and beautiful eyes appeared when several pieces of parchment were unrolled. The wolf had descended on a pale world of ice and snow, looking up sadly at the dead trees. The font was larger on the pages than in the previous book.

This was a book from the Wolf Country. Shun was convinced. After his conversation with Dian the other day, Shun had researched it and found out that most of the books published in the Butterfly Country only described wolves as harmful and demonic animals. Wolves were inscribed into people’s minds as an enemy to defeat, just as the number thirteen was considered ominous in Christianity.

Shun looked at the illustrations in the book. The people of the Butterfly Country would never accept such a brave and beautiful looking wolf.

A book from the country where Craig was born. Shun was intrigued. He settled down on the sofa and rolled up the cover.

Chapter 12: If There Was Twenty-One, That Would be Bad

I also asked about the Flower Country, which was located to the east of the Butterfly Country, but it was apparently not recommended for travel since the immigration tax for those coming from the Butterfly or Wolf Countries was extremely high.

The militaristic Flower Country had invaded the Butterfly Country about eighty years ago.

The alliance between the Butterfly Country and the Wolf Country forced both the Flower Country’s army and magicians to withdraw, and they formed a truce with the Flower Country, who made considerable sacrifices, including a change in their ruler and reparations.

The Wolf Country and Butterfly Country had also planned to make the Flower Country a vassal state, so it is no longer considered a potential threat.

Additionally, the Butterfly Country and Wolf Country were long-standing rivals and were not close friends. Thus, they are maintaining their international security with a “three-sided measure” where they check in on and monitor each other.

Although people were allowed to travel freely between the three countries, it was a strange situation.

The reason why Shun knows the history of the game’s setting so well, was because he was now a well-educated prince these days.

He had gotten a job thanks to his computational ability, but as long as he was living in this world, the history and culture were essential knowledge. To be honest, his governor’s voice was grating, but he also had a lot of knowledge. It was worth it to get all the knowledge Shun could, so he listened attentively while stuffing cotton in his ears.

However, the mythology of the Butterfly Kingdom? Shun turned towards his governor and asked why he wasn’t informed of this.

It was a story that was read to children. In other words, Momotaro1. If Momotaro was read to a twenty-eight year old man, the quality of the governor’s curriculum would be questioned.

1. Momotaro is a Japanese folk story about a boy that was born from a peach. If you’re curious, there’s a couple good, short youtube videos about it. Here’s one. Or you can read it here.

“Oh, you’re here.”

While Shun was thinking about this, they had arrived at the hideout before he knew it. When Dian got out of the carriage, revealing the man that he had spoken to, all of Shun’s thoughts were blown away.

“What are you doing? Come out quickly.”

Dian dragged Shun out of the carriage, and he now stood before Craig.

“Good morning. I apologize for arriving late.”

“No, there’s no fixed hours… Did something happen again?”

“Oh, no, not really…”

The strange expression on Craig’s face struck him. Craig was thinking that Shun was late because he was held up by some nefarious person, just like he had been the night before.

“No, no, no. It’s okay. I just overslept.”

“That’s good then.” The tension in Craig’s shoulders relaxed. He was both worried and relieved to know that nothing had happened. As an employer, it was natural for him to worry about his employees, but he was a bit upset. This is just normal…

Shun looked at him talking to Dian, and he felt a strange sense of incongruity.

“What?”

“Are you feeling sick?”

The atmosphere around Craig was different.

Shun felt like the aura coming out of his (Craig’s) body was growing darker. If Shun was to compare it to a color, it would be like a normal red color that had turned into a blinding, deep red. Craig expressed a negative response to Shun’s question from his darkening expression. Craig, and even Dian, rolled their eyes at Shun’s words.

Shun stretched with his arms up as his as they could go and stood a bit taller.

It felt good to stretch a part of him that hadn’t been used in a while. Even though he had been reborn, his physical strength and energy remained at the bottom of the barrel and relying solely on his memory to do several mental calculations was tiring. He needed something to assist him.

While Shun was looking for food in the kitchen while the owner was absent on a break, he heard a voice from the back door.

“The shoe store on the corner of Third Avenue is closed and I can’t take the shoes there to be repaired. You used to go there for a while. Do you know anything about it?”

Shun slowly opened the door, and saw a red haired boy, Roy, who was talking, and picked up a homemade pie. The Dawn Fog was not only employed by wealthy merchants or farmers, but also by general stores that were in need of guards.

Shun hurriedly closed his mouth before he called out to them, when the villain-faced Gita2 spoke bitterly.

2. I’m pretty sure this is the first time this character is mentioned. In case you’re confused.

“It was the twentieth prince.”

Shun’s chest jumped in surprise.

The twentieth prince. He was Shun’s older brother because of the game’s setting, but he had heard that his behavior wasn’t very good. Shun listened in on their conversation with hushed breath.

Roy said that he had fancied the shoe store’s daughter and tried to touch her, but she had refused him. So he had hired some bad-natured people to harass them out of spite. It had been quiet there for a while because of Gita, but as soon as his contract was over, the shop was destroyed.

“But because of the prince, the shoe shop can’t get anything even if they sued.”

Roy spat out, “Are you going to cry yourself to sleep over it?”

Shun had passed the shoe store several times before. The pretty girl and the kind-looking shopkeeper had always been doing business harmoniously.

“Must be nice, huh? Eating our taxes and wheat, but… Huh? Shun?”

“What are you doing over there? Are you tired of all of the numbers?”

The two gave friendly smiles.

They had been distant with Shun at first because he was a rich son. However, as their money was properly allocated to them, he became recognized as a companion.

“No, I’m not tired, but my eyes are a little strained… Was that true?”

Roy laughed bitterly and sat down next to him. Gita nodded and clicked his tongue in response to Shun’s question.

“The aristocrats who swagger about proudly are snobbish, but they are not as bad as the royals. Do you want to let that kind of thing go unchecked?”

Roy hummed in agreement. Neither of them were particularly antigovernment. However, he still directed his words at Shun, wondering if he was going to tolerate it.

“The king certainly is a bit of a jerk, but at least his bastard offspring and his mother kept him in the palace. That’s going to end with this generation, isn’t it?”

With Shun, who was looking a bit blue in the face, the two became even more excited and asked if he was going to move to the Wolf Country now.

In this world where there is no such thing as an official press, the majority of public impressions are determined by the gossip surrounding the words and actions of the people involved. The former king of the Butterfly Country was a typical, foolish king, who imposed heavy taxes on ordinary people and facilitated a wife, who was a massive spendthrift.

Although the economy and the lives of the ordinary people were getting better under King Alan’s, Shun’s father’s, reign, the royal family still had a bad reputation. And the twentieth prince seemed to be running it into the ground.

If Shun’s status was revealed, he would no longer be welcome here. He knew this before, but now he was convinced. Originally he was thinking about his future, but before he knew it, Shun had started to want to be more friendly with these two, Gin, Evan, all of them, and help the Dawn Fog.

Shun had to hide who he was. However, he was also angered by the actions of his brother and prince.

Therefore, Shun immediately told the first prince what had happened that night.

A few days later, in the name of the First Prince, Shun heard Roy panting about the new store and the large quantity of good quality wheat given to the shoemaker as an apology.

However, the reputation of the royal family couldn’t be fixed overnight, so Shun is still working hard and masquerading as an unfortunate son of a wealthy merchant.

*********************************
TL Note: That conversation… poor Shun had to be sitting there like:

Also, I can’t believe how nice he was about it despite how clearly messed up that entire conversation was (expecting a wealthy merchant’s son to be able to do something about the royal family smh. I really think they probably just trying to get him to pour some money on the problem tho).

Chapter 11: Sophistic Adults

Shun took a step out of the room. The expensive carpet sunk about five centimeters, which helped with his plan.

It was half-past eight in the morning. Shun had been energetic lately, but on this morning, he was even more full of energy. Because he had slept in an hour, it was about time for the maidservants and the Kabedons — the princes — to wander around.

A prince is supposed to have at least one attendant with him when he leaves the First Avenue’s gates. However, the twentieth prince and others often leave without following the rules, and although there were no severe penalties for this, Shun snuck around like he was breaking the rules.

After all, there was a secret path on the second floor of the Eastern Tower to the outside. Shun had seen it used in the middle of the game by the first prince to sneak out on a date with the heroine, but now, there were no signs of it being used.

Shun traveled from the South Tower where he lived through a passageway leading to the East Tower, chose the least popular path, and made his way toward his destination.

He was going to go to the courtyard to pick some flowers as naturally as possible. Shun came down the stairs and had almost reached the landing.

It didn’t look like anyone was around…

“What’s the matter?”

“Ah!”

Suddenly, Shun had a heard a low, attractive voice from behind him and consequently fell back onto his butt. When he looked back, he saw a golden haired, green-eyed noble person there.

Shun was stunned for a moment by the person’s dazzling appearance before he managed to stand up, anticipating a kabedon was coming soon. The man was a tall and had a well-proportioned body with golden hair that glittered in the sun, beautiful, white skin, and peridot colored eyes.

It was Theodore, the first prince.

Theodore was the most popular character in the otome game and was position in the center in the game’s artwork with no complaints, considering his outstanding looks.

Hearing an ikemen1 whisper a line like, “I’ll get it. The country and you too―” would make anyone blush in several ways.

“Oh, I’m alright.”

Shun naturally took the hand that was held out to him. The smart gesture was quintessential. Even so, he stood up and instinctively took a step back.

Theodore was a dream-like prince like this, but if Shun made one wrong choice, he would turn into a yandere and keep Shun in captivity. Moreover, there were several places of confinement, such as an iron cage wrapped with thorns or a summer home with a garden full of white lilies, puzzling Shun and making him wonder why there was so much effort put into them.

It was also sometimes far too easy to stumble into these flags.

Moreover, there were more kabedons in Theodore’s route than any other. In this game, both pick-up lines and kabedons were far too frequent. It’s said that when used sparingly it is far more powerful. Don’t sell it short. This is something that absolutely everyone would agree with, even the people of Yahoo! Answers would be on your side.

“What’s really going on?”

Just as Shun was attempting to make a discreet getaway, he was peered at curiously.

“Are you curious about that?”

The green eyes seemed to keep their senses, and he was relieved that there wouldn’t be a kabedon event. As he recalled, they had had a few conversations, but Shun had never be pressured.

Theodore was pointing to the landing wall. There was a large, oil painting that was at least as tall as the average adult. It had the same atmosphere as the one in his room.

A man in dull armor was thrusting a long sword cast in golden light at a large beast. The beast lay on the desolate land, bleeding and dying.

Up until now, Shun had always been so worried about being seen on his way to the secret passageway that he had not even noticed the painting. He gulped in anticipation of the incoming, gruesome description.

“Yes, I was wondering what this animal was.”

“It’s a wolf, isn’t it?” Theodore laughed, admonishing his ignorant brother.

The beast’s fur was neither silver nor gold, perhaps covered in the sand from the battlefield, but it certainly had sharp teeth, a protruding nose, and triangular ears. However, it was a different size and a far cry from the wolves seen in zoos and on the Discovery Channel.

“You should go out more and see the world sometimes. Not shut yourself in.”

Shun could tell that Theodore was really worried about him from the smile he gave him.

To tell the truth, Theodore was Shun’s favorite.

It was understandable from his still where he smiled while on horseback upon his triumphant return from the subjugation of barbarians and demons that he was cool and most certainly the next king.

However, since Shun was running late, he wanted Theodore to hurry up and go somewhere else as soon as possible.

“Yes, by the way, are you going anywhere?”

Pretending to be innocent, Shun tried to shift the conversation, but Theodore glanced at Shun’s waist as if he wasn’t listening.

”You, what happened to the Sword of Protection?”

Shun was startled. He had dropped it back at the black market on Fourth Avenue and hadn’t seen it since. Even if it was stolen and sold, it wouldn’t be made publicly available because it belonged to the royal family, and he was going to return to the black market anyway.

After exploring the regular market the night before, Shun had planned on going to the black market today. However, this plan had to be put on hold, stalling his search for the dagger, since the heroine’s curse hadn’t been lifted yet.

Additionally, Shun had asked the governor about it the other day, and it seemed that the dagger was actually important. It absorbed the power of the owner and eventually becomes an “amulet”2. So if he happened to have lost it, he would be in a lot of trouble.

“Oh! I forgot it. I’m going to get it now!”

After the remarkably stilted conversation, Shun ran down the stairs to avoid any further questioning.

A few minutes later, Shun discovered no one was nearby and went back up the stairs, and finally, he was able to recite that stupid spell.

“It’s unusual for you to be late.”

When Shun appeared breathlessly in his usual place a little farther into the market, it was Dian who greeted him. He was relieved that it wasn’t Craig.

“Give me a second.”

Dian was standing next to the carriage and holding a cup of kalia, that coffee-like drink, and a paper bag with white bread in it in one hand. He had probably bought breakfast at the market because Shun was late.

“No, I’m sorry. Take your time eating.”

Shun stepped up to the windowless carriage and finally caught his breath. Thank goodness he had a flexible work schedule.

However, he had still kept Dian waiting, and so he sat on the other side of the table and apologized again.

“Once was enough. It’s really alright. I was able to find a new, delicious bakery that just opened because of you.”

Dian offered some of the bread to Shun while saying this. Contrary to his appearance, he was very friendly. A smile spread across his villainous face and became more friendly.

Shun reached out and took some of the bread he’d been offered. He was grateful for the aroma of soft barley, as he had missed breakfast.

“Now that you mention it, has Dian ever been to the Wolf Country?”

Shun asked casually, covering his face with bread. Suddenly, Diane’s expression became alarmed. His hand, which had been reaching for his next bite of bread, stopped, and his black eyes were now staring at Shun with trepidation.

Shun knew that Dian was actually Craig’s ex-guard that had come along with Craig when he ran away. However, he was taken aback by Dian’s reaction as if Shun had committed a contraindication.

“Well, you see, I’ve never been out of Butterfly Country, so I’m ignorant of the world… or rather, I’ve never even been out of my own house really. The Wolf Country is close by, so I wish I could get a chance to go there before I die.”

He pretended to be a desperate and ignorant young man. When he was speaking with Theodore, the wolf was said to symbolize the Wolf Country, so it had just come out of his mouth. He really didn’t mean anything by it.

“My friend is there, and he still shows up once in a while.”

Diane smiled again with an exuberant smile. Feeling relieved, Shun took another bite of the white bread.

“The wolf is their motif, and it’s cool, isn’t it? Also, it’s nice that anyone can use it. Here only royalty can use it.”

Well, even if Shun could use it, he, a man, probably wouldn’t use it in his daily life because it was a butterfly, after all.

“It’s better not to praise the wolf so much here.”

Shun saw Dian scratching his head in a troubled manner, while continuing to eat his bread.

“The Wolf is a symbol of darkness in the mind of the King of Creation. Someone as educated as you, surely you’ve read the myths of the Butterfly Kingdom.”

Shun nodded vaguely in response to Dian’s mysterious gaze, and Dian was surprised to find out that Shun hadn’t known this.

Shun’s family was special. Shun had been a like bird in a gilded cage3, and he had received a slightly different kind of education. So he had assumed the mythology was an extension of that.

Diane’s suspicions seemed to have been dispelled, but Shun thought twice this time. Even though the two neighboring countries had a friendly relationship, were wolves really an absolute evil in the Butterfly Kingdom’s myths?

The king’s castle was decorated with paintings of the slaughter of wolves. If Shun was a messenger from the Wolf Kingdom, he would think that he was a lamb to the slaughter. He doesn’t understand it.

When Shun asked Dian about it, Dian explained after a bit of hesitation.

“Although it is a wolf killed in the paintings, he is a different being from the holy beast of the Wolf Kingdom. That is how we reconcile this.”

1. Ikemen – a cool/handsome man

2. There was no further explanation on what exactly this amulet does or how the dagger transforms into it… so, maybe we’ll find out some day?

3. The raws called him a “boxed boy”, which I assume means something like this. I googled for a while but couldn’t find anything about it but a platformer game.

TL Note: Hi everyone! My fever finally went away a few days ago, and now that I’m caught up on classwork I’ll be back to my regular schedule now. Sorry about that ya’ll.
